The fact that she had sheet-cake frosting smudged on the corner of her mouth did nothing to diminish her authority

Unsung Heroine by Sarah Kuhn

June 22, 2019 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I have been reading but not reviewing Sarah Kuhn’s Heroine Complex series. I was very happy to get an ARC of Unsung Heroine from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. At some point I will review the three previous books – Heroine Complex, Heroine Worship, and Heroine’s Journey. I will say now that they are fun books, and you should definitely read them before picking up this novella. Unsung Heroine focuses on Lucy Valdez, the bodyguard with no superpowers, but awesome fighting skills, a killer fashion sense, […]

Grumpy and Guarded and Falling in Love

Island Fling with the Tycoon by Therese Beharrie

June 21, 2019 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I received this from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed Island Fling with the Tycoon so much. It was my first Therese Beharrie book and I look forward to many more. Piper Evans flies from her home in Cape Town, South Africa to the Greek Islands to attend her older brother’s wedding. Piper and her brother, Liam, survived growing up with a very controlling father and have not been close as adults. She had not felt like she could afford to travel […]

Very Pretty, But Not Practical for My Life

Modern Mediterranean: Sun-drenched recipes from Mallorca and beyond by Marc Fosh

June 14, 2019 by Emmalita 2 Comments

This is a very pretty cookbook with some interesting recipes, but not terribly doable for my life. If you live in or around Mallorca, this is probably a great cookbook. In fact, this is exactly the kind of cookbook I coveted 20 years ago. I received an ARC of this cookbook from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Marc Fosh is a British expat chef who owns and runs a Michelin starred restaurant on Mallorca. Mallorca is blessed with many fresh local ingredient and […]

Nice Take on Cinderella

If the Shoe Fits by Deborah Guarino and Seth Hippen

June 8, 2019 by Chris 3 Comments

Disclaimer: ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Cinderella might be the most popular fairy tale in the world. It seems as if each culture has its own version, there are the off shoots such as Coat of Many Furs, there are movies and more movies, the character appears in I don’t know how many books. There is even a short novel told from the viewpoint of one the transformed rats. So, do we really need another Cinderella story? Well, we do need […]

A Worthwhile Cast Iron Cookbook

The Modern Cast Iron Cookbook: A New Generation of Easy, Fresh and Healthy Recipes by Tiffany La Forge

June 6, 2019 by Emmalita 7 Comments

I adore my cast iron skillet and my housemate’s cast iron dutch oven and I use them several times a week. However, I have friends who are intimidated by their cast iron. When I saw Tiffany La Forge’s The Modern Cast Iron Cookbook on NetGalley, I was excited and hoped to find a cookbook I could share with my more tentative friends. Tiffany La Forge is a pastry chef and food writer. She has a blog, Parsnips and Pastries which I visit occasionally, though i […]
