The overlap of horror and reality

The Last Temptation by Neil Gaiman, Alice Cooper, Michael Zulli

July 4, 2022 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

I was looking on the bookshelves for something to read that wouldn’t require too much thought, and this copy of the Neil Gaiman/Alice Cooper collaboration The Last Temptation jumped out. A horror graphic novel seems perfect for July 4 in America 2022. It’s weird how I have learned to tolerate gore and horror, even going so far as starting a Stranger Things watch. But I suppose given the daily shitshow of gun violence, intolerance and repression in the land of the free and home of […]

The Wake

The Wake by Neil Gaiman

February 15, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

Well that was well done. We also got some nice closure on some things and of course a tale or two to round things out. “The Wake” follows Dream’s family as they prepare to say goodbye along with others. I thought this was great. Gaiman does a great job and has shown us before that the Endless can often “die” and another form of them comes about. We know that the Despair we have known in this series, was not the first, and even know […]

The Kindly Ones

The Kindly Ones by Neil Gaiman

February 15, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

Well we know that this one was a long time coming. We got hints of this in the last couple of the graphic novels. We follow Dream to the end. I loved how this was set-up and how Gaiman ended things. The next volume was very good and it answered some questions I had about a lot of things that were still unclear (who was Dream’s last lover, why was Daniel so important, what happens to the Endless as time marches on, etc.) “The Kindly […]

World’s End

World's End by Neil Gaiman

February 14, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

This was by no means bad, (I gave it 4 stars) but compared to the other volumes it just felt like it was missing something. The stories were all over the place and some of the text was too hard for me to read. I gave up on a few panels and just focused on the illustrations. “World’s End” follows a pair of colleagues (Brant and Charlene) who get in a car accident on their way to Chicago. Finding themselves in the middle of a […]

Brief Lives

Brief Lives by Neil Gaiman

February 14, 2022 by Classic 2 Comments

This was very good. We follow Dream and Delirium as they go off and try to find their lost brother, Destruction. But it also nicely ties up the story of Orpheus. Brief Lives in this one definitely seems to not only refer to humans, but also to the Endless themselves. “Brief Lives” has Delirium coming more undone than usual and is determined to find Destruction. She thinks if she can find him, he can come back to the family and things will be better. I […]

Fables & Reflections

Fables & Reflections by Neil Gaiman

February 14, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

Trigger warning: Rape I liked this one though Dream feels like a bit player in most of these stories. There’s is a darkness in all of these stories though. I don’t know which one affected me the most, probably the story of Augustus Caesar. I am going to rate these stories separately since they really do feel like a series of short stories that are just taking place in the world of The Sandman. “Fear of Falling” (3.5 stars)-Not a bad start. We all have […]
