Fortunately, I am mighty!

IT’S HERE! IT’S HERE!! IT’S FINALLY HERE!!! *Ahem* Apologies, but I have a lot of feelings about Neil Gaiman’s books, and it seems like this one was announced 742 years ago. However, I got my hands on it a week and half before the official release date, because I’m bullshit lucky and someone at my local bookstore put it on the shelves early. One of my favourite books in recent years was Philip Pullman’s retelling of some classic fairy tales, Fairy Tales from the Brothers […]

“Every lover is, in his heart, a madman, and, in his head, a minstrel.”

I have never been a big fantasy fan but CBR (and, specifically, Badkittyuno) have led me to try new things to mixed results.  Neil Gaiman has been a welcome addition to my author’s list beginning with last year’s American Gods– probably my favorite book from the CBR8 read. Stardust is Gaiman’s fairy tail for adults and it’s a pretty successful attempt. This was an increasingly rare instance when I saw the movie (granted, forever ago) before reading the novel and while they have similarities they are also […]

“One of the extraordinary adaptive powers of our species is its ability to transmute a stray encounter into a first chapter.”

One of things that I love about Goodreads is that it helps you discover sequels that you never knew existed. When I logged my review of Neverwhere a couple weeks ago, Goodreads called it Neverwhere (London Below, The World of Neverwhere), indicating that other stories must exist in the series! In this instance, it referred to a short story called How the Marquis Got His Coat Back. Google told me it was published in The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2015, so…here we are! While the story of […]

Smoke and mirrors are more useful than you think

This was my second anthology by Neil Gaiman, and at first I had to check that this wasn’t the same as the first one.  There are four stories toward the beginning that are also in M is for Magic (“Chivalry,” “The Price,” “Troll Bridge,” and “Don’t Ask Jack”) , so if you would like my opinion on those you can go here.   The first thing that surprised me was that the introductions for the stories were all in the beginning, instead of before each […]

I want to say I excpect more from Gaiman, except when it comes to his short stories I don’t really.

Trigger Warnings is a collection of short stories by Neil Gaiman, I believe his third collection. It’s a pretty meh collection, practically all of the stories were forgotten the moment I turned the page. I find this to be true of most of his short stories if I’m honest, I like (and occasionally love) his novels, but his short stories generally leave me cold. That this collection is so bland is rather ironic considering the tittle. Before I get into the actual stories, I do […]

“I mean, maybe I am crazy. I mean, maybe. But if this is all there is, then I don’t want to be sane.”

I had a very bad day on Thursday. But I had the day off from work, and some time to collect myself, so I decided to run a bath at 11 o’clock in the morning. I needed reading material — because I can’t take a bath without it — but I had finished my previous book and hadn’t yet started a new one. Between my crappy mood, and the fact that I didn’t want to get out of the tub to get a different book, I […]
