Underwhelming

February 26, 2017 by Ellesfena 2 Comments

This is a retelling of Sleeping Beauty, with some Snow White mixed in. Since I read it on my Kindle, I didn’t realize before I started that this is actually a sort of graphic novel, or maybe an illustrated short story? I’m not sure what it looks like in actual book form. I had just assumed it was a regular novel, but it’s not even 75 pages long. The Sleeper and the Spindle is the story of a queen, who sets out with three dwarf […]

Neil Gaiman narrates the myths of my people

February 22, 2017 by Malin 5 Comments

4.5 stars When it was announced that Neil Gaiman was doing a book of Norse myths, I was, not to put to fine a point on it, giddy with excitement. I’ve always been a mythology fangirl. I love the Greek and Roman myths, the Egyptians, but as I am Scandinavian, the Norse myths are obviously among the ones I grew up reading, even as a young child. I had several books of the Danish comic book Valhalla, so I knew several of the stories before […]

“Of course it was Loki. It’s always Loki.”

February 21, 2017 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

“Of course I do,” said Thor. But he didn’t. He was just doing whatever he felt like doing. That was what Thor did best. Neil Gaiman has been a Norse mythology fanboy since childhood. His novel American Gods (my first Gaiman and one of my Top 5 books from last year’s CBR) heavily features Odin and Loki. Gaiman wrote Norse Mythology in part because a lot of the Norse Gods have been lost to history while the Greek & Roman Gods have persevered. This is a fairly complete collection, at […]

If Neil Gaiman reads it, you can get used to any name

February 12, 2017 by crystalclear 1 Comment

I’m fairly sure I saw this movie, but I can’t remember it for the life of me.  So I picked up the audiobook. (Neil Gaiman, why must you insist on reading your audiobooks softly? Talk louder!)  Our protagonist, Tristram Thorn, doesn’t show up for a while. We see his origins first, and discover how he came to be.  Growing up in an extremely small and isolated town, he is understandably a bit naive.  He does take direction and advice well, though.  Except in […]

And it was all going so well…

February 12, 2017 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

This is a short story/YA book written by Neil Gaiman, and performed by a full cast in the audiobook.  I suppose we get a full cast in exchange for the illustrations we do not get to see.  It is an extended and alternate take on Sleeping Beauty, as you may have guessed.  And if you know Neil Gaiman, you may have also guessed that nothing is straightforward here.  The story seems straightforward enough – the sleeping curse on the kingdom is spreading, and Snow White, the queen […]

Don’t Think This Will be A Classic Like American Gods

February 8, 2017 by Classic 2 Comments

I think the biggest take away for me for this book is that not everything is American Gods. I thought that this book would be Gaiman’s take on Norse myths. And for the most part besides some humor and dialogue here and there, Gaiman plays this pretty straight from beginning to end. There are some passages here and there that moved me and some that made me smile. I am happy to have read this, but this is not going to be something that I […]
