Look up….all the way up….. and the stars will tell you a story about a curious boy

Look Up with Me: Neil deGrasse Tyson: A Life Among the Stars by Jenifer Berne

March 27, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am not a fan of Neil deGrasse Tyson mostly because I am unfamiliar with his work (and I have heard rumors about a less-than-friendly personality). However, putting aside any bias I might have, I tackled Look Up with Me: Neil deGrasse Tyson: A Life Among the Stars as if it was any other book. After all, Jenifer Berne’s book did not interest me because of the subject, but because of Lorraine Nam’s illustrations. Paper artist Lorraine Nam’s cover is fascinating. The bold color of […]

“The universe is under no obligation to make sense to you.”

July 5, 2018 by crystalclear 1 Comment

So, this is a book of of words.  And science. It is actually full of science words.  And I understood most some of them!   This is supposed to be a summary of astrophysics.  A Sparknotes, if you will. A little taste to see if it’s to your liking, and if it is, you can pursue more on your own time.     First we start out with a very tiny condensed ball of all of the stuff ever.  Then it expands. Our man Neil […]

Story Time with Neil

May 23, 2018 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

I really like Neil deGrasse Tyson’s approach to science.  I’ve been a fan of his for a while.  I enjoy the way that he makes so many big concepts easier to understand and I like the way he relates science to popular culture.  I agree with his take on the importance of science literacy, especially in politics and for children.  All of this makes up the reasons that I chose the read his latest book. Astrophysics for People in a Hurry is a faster, more […]

A Quick Hit of Science

February 28, 2018 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

I’m not really in a hurry so much as I am overscheduled. I am also the lone non-science person in my family. I love science, but my brain doesn’t always hold onto the salient details of science. Say, for example, the difference between astrophysics and cosmology (Astrophysics is a sub-branch of astronomy to deal with physics of celestial objects and phenomena. Cosmology talks about universe as a whole which includes origin, evolution and ultimate fate of the universe.). But, I really like Neil deGrasse Tyson’s […]

“In other words, after the laws of physics, everything else is opinion.”

September 10, 2017 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

Who doesn’t love Neil deGrasse Tyson? My first experience with this charismatic genius were his visits to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart; between his television appearances and his Twitter presence he is at the forefront of making science cool again. “The universe is under no obligation to make sense to you. —NDT” This is exactly what it is billed as- important principles of Astrophysics written in an easily digestible manner that is ideal for people without a science background who don’t want to devote years to […]

Starting off 2015 with SCIENCE.

January 26, 2015 by Fiat.Luxury 4 Comments

I just got back online after a long January vacation and there are already SO MANY BOOKS y’all have reviewed that I now have to buy. I picked this book up last year thanks to this CBR6 post and I agree 100% with Lollygagger’s review! The Pluto Files is a lightweight but nevertheless educational examination of the history, cultural clout, and scientific pedigree of Pluto–or, the Kuiper belt object formerly known as our solar system’s ninth planet.  Neil deGrasse Tyson, with humor and grace, frames the science in his narrative: in his role as […]
