Nature, love, loss, magnolia flowers and friendships

Pilu of the Woods by Mai K. Nguyen

August 27, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

**possible spoilers** I read Pilu of the Woods by accident. I was looking at graphic novels and meant to just look at it, but it got into my purchase pile. And even though it was a surprise find, I strongly recommend Mai K. Nguyen and their graphic novel about loss, family, grief and coming to terms with it all. In fact, so much so that I am planning on donating my copy to my library in honor of a friends first grand-baby. (Which I know […]

I judged this book by its cover, and that was my mistake

The Boilerplate Rhino: Nature in the Eye of the Beholder by David Quammen

July 7, 2019 by KimMiE" 4 Comments

CBR11bingo: The Collection Look at that awesome cover! It has a rhino on it, for heaven’s sake, which was enough for me to pick it up and look closer. I had been browsing books in the Quadrant Book Mart, one of my favorite little spots in Easton, PA, where I was visiting with my family two Christmases ago, when I spotted that intriguing image. Something about used book stores combined with travel makes me want to test airline luggage weight limits by stocking up on […]

An homage to Granny, the world’s oldest known orca, who lived to be 105 years old!

Wild Orca: The Oldest, Wisest Whale in the World by Brenda Peterson

June 26, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Wild Orca: The Oldest, Wisest Whale in the World has a little quirk that at first, I missed (looking back, it was pretty obvious). The Granny the young girl speaks of is not her Granny, but Granny the orca whale that is the matriarch of three different pods of whales called J, K and L. My first clue something was up was the fact Granny might not show up if she was busy, and since she was busy being 105 years-old, that might be the case. […]

“I am a part of all that I have met.” – Lord Tennyson

Carl and the Meaning of Life by Deborah Freedman

May 29, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Carl and the Meaning of Life by Deborah Freedman is a spiritual look at how all things are connected. When the Mouse asks Carl, the Worm, why does he do the things he does, Carl does not know. So off he goes to ask the other animals what his purpose is, until one day there is no one left as they have all left. The answer to why everyone has left, gives Carl the answer he was looking for. Freedman pairs the text with some fun, soft, […]

Next time you say you can’t, think of the hummingbird

Hummingbird by Nicola Davies

May 9, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Wow! This book is just that, WOW. The other day, I saw Hummingbird on one of the receiver’s desks at work. I saw this lushly colorful cover by Jane Ray. There were flashy reds, bold blues and gracious greens. I figured this was going to be either something beyond amazing or fall flat and only have its art going for it. Thankfully, it is beyond amazing. While there is nothing earth shattering about this book, Nicola Davies beautifully blends a story and hummingbird facts seamlessly. […]

If I was a pen, this review would be my canvas

If I Was the Sunshine by Julie Foglilano

April 17, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If I Was the Sunshine is one of those books where there is nothing wrong with it, yet it is also a YMMV book. The text will be relatable on a personal level. You take away what you put into it. If you think it will be a lovely story like Guess How Much I Love You (a father/child relationship) it will be a lovely story about a parent/adult and child relationship). If you think it will be a sappy-pappy piece, then it will be […]
