“Life is something we need to stop correcting. My boy was a pocket universe I could never hope to fathom. Every one of us is an experiment, and we don’t even know what the experiment is testing.”

Bewilderment by Richard Powers

June 22, 2022 by cheerbrarian 2 Comments

In one word: Gutting I have something shocking to say. I hope you’re sitting down. I’m behind in my book reviews. I KNOW, I KNOW. Utterly surprising, as um, it’s become my habit, wherein I let a few books pile up, and then stress about being “behind” which I am using quotation marks to illustrate the falsity of this statement. Because how can I be “behind” in a hobby that is supposed to be fun. I mean, these are not required book reviews for a […]

Take a hike

The Hike: (Nature Book for Kids, Outdoors-Themed Picture Book for Preschoolers and Kindergarteners) by Alison Farrell

June 7, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Hike: (Nature Book for Kids, Outdoors-Themed Picture Book for Preschoolers and Kindergarteners) probably is all you need to know about the book. Yet, to expand it is a fictional story of three friends (though there is an image that makes it seem as if they are siblings), who go on a hike to explore. And they find a little of this and a little of that and of little of something else. The hike results in the three of them finding the big and […]

How Great is this reef anyway?

The Great Barrier Reef by Helen Scales

May 12, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I recently read a graphic novel (from First Second publishers) about coral reefs; therefore, The Great Barrier Reef by Helen Scales had some repetition. Yet, this book was focused on the Great Barrier Reef, and not all the worlds coral reefs. This allows what was learned before to now be applied to the one specific area. Lisk Feng illustrations are what really makes the story for me. They are not photographs, but neither are they cartoonish. This in-between approach was refreshing. You are learning, but […]

I’m hooked on these books

Obsessive About Octopuses, by Owen Davey

Curious About Crocodiles by Owen Davey

May 12, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I will admit it, I am hooked on Owen Davey and their animal books. In Obsessive About Octopuses, I learned facts that I did not even know I needed to know about octopuses! All sizes, shapes, color, bone, no bone, deadly, mimics and more are covered. The pages are detailed, but not crowded. There is much going on, but it is also accessible for most ages. Each piece of information is presented to be educational and fun. I have found probably one of my new […]

Well hot beaver dam(n)!

Building by Henry Cole

May 2, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When you grow up in an area that is known for wildlife, you know all there is to know about most animals. Right? Not necessarily. Henry Cole added to my knowledge and confirmed some knowledge I already had about beavers in Building. While not an in-depth look into the critters of the dam building variety, it is a fun introduction. We follow a family of beavers building their home. We see from finding the location to having pups. We see the seasons changing, the dangers […]

Can Nature Heal Itself?

Islands of Abandonment: Life in the Post-Human Landscape by Cal Flyn

May 1, 2022 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: Readers interested in climate change, abandonment, natural disasters, and nature. In a nutshell: Author Flyn explores a variety of places across the world where humans have left a space – either because of their own damage, or natural disaster, or change in the way of living – and looks at how the earth renews itself, sometimes coming back stronger than before. Worth quoting: “We weed out plants well suited to the ground and conditions, and insist on propping up expensive, ill-suited, ornamental ones. […]
