The Next Chapter

Run Book One by John Lewis

March 9, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Run Book One is an easier read than the March trilogy by the same team of John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, Nate Powell, and L. Fury. However, there are pages that are terribly crowded with text that covers the illustrations and can make it difficult to read at times. For me, the combination of the black and white illustrations and this crowded information makes everything blur together. Along with a physically dark format (the black colors can be solid), sometimes I lost the message being told. […]

Kiss and Don’t Tell

Come Again by Nate Powell

March 17, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I hate to admit this, but I am not sure what I read when it comes to Come Again by Nate Powell. On the surface it is obvious: a free love, of the earth community lives together off by themselves. They only go to town for market days and a few supplies they cannot make or grow themselves. They sell their wares (some even are legal) and even dance to bands playing. The community consists of friends old and new because of the community (some […]

March: Book Three by John Lewis

September 18, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

March: Book Three is a slower read then John Lewis and Andrew Aydin’s other two graphic novels because the history told is extremely detailed. While it is all important, some things could have been edited down a smidgen. This history is not easy to deal with to begin with, therefore, the younger (even some teen readers) might get lost in what should have been probably a novel and not a graphic novel. But it is a great look at the other side of the text […]

Behind the scenes of History

March Book Two by John Lewis

September 11, 2019 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

In many ways the March Book One is the stronger of the two books, but book two of the March series has more details, more historical events people might have heard of and these events seem to take less time between them. Perhaps this is just due to Lewis moving more quickly through his writing of the story. But there is much going on and you need to pay attention. History unfolds in front of your eyes in ways that seem unimaginable but also, being […]

March: Book One by John Lewis

August 16, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

#cbr11bingo #History   March: Book One by John Lewis is one of those books I wish I did not have to rate. Mostly because, while I enjoyed the experience of reading it, I am actually not a fan. Let me explain. I appreciate everything about it: the build up to the historical March on Washington. The showing of the Civil Rights movement by the youth of this country has a slightly different spin then what your textbooks probably taught you. The seeing history unfold does […]

Necessary Trouble

November 16, 2017 by faintingviolet 2 Comments

I try to give myself a healthy reading diet, and part of that diet is books from the point of view of people who do not experience the world the same way my privilege as a cis white woman allows. When I picked up March: Book One it felt in many ways a basic history, an introduction to world that I was already relatively familiar with, even though it was not my own. If Book One is a primer then Book Two is a call […]
