I love everything this book chooses to be. #CBRBINGO – Font

Iron Widow (Iron Widow, #1) by Xiran Jay Zhao

July 16, 2022 by narfna 4 Comments

“How do you take the fight out of half the population and render them willing slaves? You tell them they’re meant to do nothing but serve from the minute they’re born. You tell them they’re weak. You tell them they’re prey. You tell them over and over, until it’s the only truth they’re capable of living.” This book is a scream of rage into the night, and I’m so glad it got published. Even if you don’t normally read YA, I would urge you to […]

Double Cannonballing with Book Lovers.

Book Lovers by Emily Henry

July 13, 2022 by narfna 5 Comments

I promise I didn’t plan to Double Cannonball with this excellent book, which just so happens to be about books and writing books, and publishing books. It’s just serendipity. I was so happy when I realized about fifty pages into this book that it was going to be another situation like with her first adult romance, Beach Read, where I’m just immediately in love with everything about it. I liked People We Meet on Vacation a lot, but it didn’t hit me in that place […]

“We’re like children . . . who burn their hands on a hot stove and then think the solution is to blow up all the stoves.”

Abaddon's Gate (The Expanse, #3) by James S.A. Corey

July 12, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

Yeah, five stars. I knew this was going to happen, that I would feel the need to give this one five stars after a re-read, because this is the book that made me fall in love with the series. I’m not sure what it is about it exactly that makes me like it more than the first two books, which I like a lot (five stars worth now for #1!). This story just has such a clear purpose, a clear arc, and wild stuff happens […]

An academic slow-burn, very heartwarming, do recommend.

The Place Between by Kit Oliver

July 12, 2022 by narfna 2 Comments

I really enjoyed this one. If you are in the mood for a slow burn, quiet romance featuring adults with adult responsibilities and mature emotional reactions, then you might also enjoy The Place Between. I would like it if more people read it, actually, because it seems to be a bit of a hidden gem at the moment. It only has 152 reviews on Goodreads, and less than 1,000 ratings. I will also add, if you are looking for sexiness, you will find that here as […]

My thoughts, two months later.

Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo

July 12, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

. . . which are not many. I’ve honestly been wanting to read one of Malinda Lo’s books for years now, but never got around to it. After having finally done so, now I’m not sure if I’ll be reading more . . . maybe the queer Cinderella retelling (Ash, I think?). This was well-written and I liked it, and the premise is well-thought out and a bunch of other complimentary things . . . but this was just a good read for me, not […]

The Pack goes to Europe.

Magic Rises (Kate Daniels, #6) by Ilona Andrews

July 8, 2022 by narfna 15 Comments

This is my favorite of these books so far. I loved the getting-the-team-together atmosphere, the fish-out-of-water aspect of Kate, Curran, Andrea, et al. faffing around in Europe. It was interesting to see a different setting in this world, and I liked how being far away from home changed the dynamics of Kate’s relationships with the Pack. I also just liked the clarity of the story, and how because Kate and co. are also trying to find their way in unfamiliar territory, there’s a neat symmetry […]
