Liked this one a lot except for one thing which is spoilery.

Hammered (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #3) by Kevin Hearne

December 3, 2019 by narfna 4 Comments

Well, firstly, me and this book started off in a bad place. It opens with Atticus keeping his promise to Laksha, that he would steal one of Idunn’s golden apples, so that she can be immortal. But in doing so, he does some dumb shit, and also most of it made me mad because SPOILERS he literally kills all but one of my favorite figures from Norse mythology. Let’s list them out: Ratatosk, the enormous squirrel that lives on Yggdrasil the World Tree (okay, well […]

A witchin’ re-imagining

Circe by Madeline Miller

July 29, 2019 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Oh, how I loved this.  I saw everyone’s glowing comments on it on last year’s Cannonball Read, but my TBR pile was so big I couldn’t justify buying a new book.  Luckily I made an exception and once I picked it up last week I couldn’t put it down.  I have a backlog of reviews I need to write for other books I finished before I finished Circe, but I wanted to review this one first, before my feelings faded. Miller’s novel is a modern […]

The Third Pandava Sister Enters

Aru Shah and the Song of Death by Roshani Chokshi

June 21, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Not too much to say here except that this was  fun ride with Aru. I think that Chokshi did a great job with the adventure story-line while still giving a fun flavor to old stories that Aru, Mimi and the newest additions have heard about. We also had a great set-up into the next book as well. ‘Aru Shah and the Song of Death” has soul sisters Aru and Mimi trying to track down a thief who stole the god of Love’s bow and arrow. […]

“For love is no part of the dreamworld. Love belongs to Desire, and Desire is always cruel.”

The Sandman, Vol. 2: The Doll's House by Neil Gaiman

June 20, 2019 by narfna 4 Comments

I didn’t like this one as much as I did the first one, and I don’t think it’s because I read the Kindle version. The whole series is on Kindle Unlimited (the 30th anniversary editions), a service I’m already paying for, so why not try it out in that medium? The formatting on the Kindle version is actually pretty great when you get into the actual comic. The story zooms in on panels and focuses on all the right spots, and it’s big enough to […]

Anansi Boys-An incredible novel

Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman

March 27, 2019 by MarkAbaddon Leave a Comment

I admit it, I am a Neil Gaiman fanboy. So, when I tell you that this is one of the best works Neil has ever written, please believe me. This is Gaiman’s second novel and the growth from American Gods, which takes place in the same universe as Anansi Boys, is remarkable. Anansi begins, as so many tales do, with the tragic death of a main character on stage, performing karaoke, and accidentally exposing the breasts of a young woman as he tumbles off the […]

This made me track down a movie I loved as a kid about a polar bear that was totally based on Cupid and Psyche.

Mythology by Edith Hamilton

March 19, 2019 by narfna 3 Comments

This is one of those books you hear about and then buy in a used bookstore and it languishes on your bookshelves for years until you finally pick it up, and then you just end up thinking to yourself, why didn’t I pick this up sooner? Only, it’s also one of those books that really works better as a reference than as a book you sit down and read from cover to cover. I read this book over the course of most of February, in […]
