I like cats. And drawings.

The Boy Who Drew Cats: A Japanese Folktale by Lafcadio Hearn

November 25, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

There are three main times when I swear. In no particular order, when I am tired and/or mad; when I want to make a point and when something is just so fudging (only I didn’t say fudge) good. And The Boy Who Drew Cats: A Japanese Folktale by Lafcadio Hearn is one of those fudging good books. Amazing story, amazing illustrations, amazing feeling to it, even an amazing back story of the author. Perhaps more for adults (collectors of art books, of Japanese folk tales, […]

End of the Ghost Roads

Angel of the Overpass by Seanan McGuire

October 11, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 18: Border   Angel of the Overpass is perfect for “borders” because it’s a book about the borders between the living and the dead, as well as different types or realms of being dead. It’s also a ghost story, and it’s spooky season. I’d sort of been saving this one since it’s the probably final installment of Seanan McGuire’s Ghost Roads series, which I think is my favorite of her series’ though probably not the best known. The premise is firmly rooted in American […]

The island might be unspoiled but some of its residents really stink…

Summer Shadows by John Harris Dunning, Ricardo Cabral, Brad Simpson and Jim Campbell

August 6, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The cover of Summer Shadows by John Harris Dunning, Ricardo Cabral, Brad Simpson and Jim Campbell is a tad misleading. It makes things look like a teen thriller in the line of a slightly darker Christopher Pike, RL Stine, or Richie Tankersley Cusick and the like. In other words, something from the late 1980s or early 1990s when I was a teen and actually reading realistic paranormal.  Instead of a “teeny bopper thriller with supernatural” we get sex, drugs, and vampires. We get some downright […]

“I once thought opportunities were ever arising, but now, older, I realize how thinly the door to destiny opens, how quickly it shuts.”

Every Rising Sun by Jamila Ahmed

July 13, 2025 by Pooja Leave a Comment

CBR17 Bingo: Arts – Shaherazade is a storyteller, and her weaving and telling of tales is her chief pleasure and weapon throughout the story. When Shaherazade anonymously informs the Malik Shahriyar of his wife’s infidelity, she never imagines the madness – and the murders – to follow. Desperate to save the kingdom and Shahriyar himself, she nominates herself to be his bride, gambling her life on her storytelling. But between the ongoing Crusades and political tensions with neighboring kingdoms, Shaherazade may have bitten off more […]

A lovely ending to a very original fantasy trilogy

The Undercutting of Rosie and Adam by Megan Bannen

July 9, 2025 by Malin Leave a Comment

Thanks to Netgalley and Orbit Books for this ARC. My opinions, are as always, my own. This is the third book in the series, and as such, not the best place to start reading. This review may contain some spoilers for the previous two books in the series, and the place to begin is with The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy. Tanrian Marshall Rosie Fox can’t die. Or at least she doesn’t stay dead, because she’s a demigod, daughter of the Trickster. She is 157 […]

Being a samurai isn’t easy

The Worst Ronin by Maggie Tokuda-Hall

June 26, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I’ve wanted to read The Worst Ronin since before it came out as I was seeing online reader copies. I did not actually get a copy until it was over a year old. With that said, it was worth the wait. I don’t think I would have appreciated the humor or elements before now. I recommend for ages at least 12 and up as there are several places where there is violence, injury, blood and other sensitive subjects.   Overall, it is the opposite of what […]
