In the Woods is dark, complex and twisty but not in a gimmicky sort of way. It is the murder mystery I have been waiting for and I have already added the second and third books in Tana French’s Dublin Murder Squad series to my TBR list. It’s a mystery novel that is more than simply a “whodunnit.” It’s a rumination on memory and friendship with a conclusion that is an emotional kick in the gut. In 1985, three children disappeared into the woods […]
Less Scooby Mystery, More Shirley Jackson Please.
I realize now that I’m pretty difficult to please when it comes to ghost/haunted house stories. This book had all the elements; an old farmhouse, possibly haunted woods and a long dead person’s diary. In the end it just didn’t deliver for me. Possibly, it just wasn’t what I was expecting, or the fact that none of the characters really resonated with me. Overall the book was good, but not great. The Winter People follows two stories concurrently which occur 100 years apart. In […]
Lake Holly Could Be My Town
Through NetGalley, I got an ARC of the third mystery novel featuring Jimmy Vega, a New York homicide detective. However, I decided to track down the debut story and that’s what led me to the novel, Land of Careful Shadows. Like most mysteries, this story starts when a body is found. The body of a young Latina woman is found by the river in Lake Holly, about 50 miles north of New York City. Jimmy Vega, a detective from the county is sent to help, […]
Just gonna stand there and hear me cry, But that’s alright, because I love the way you lie
If books with an unreliable narrator has taught me anything, it’s that everyone is a dirty, lying secret-keeper and that you can’t trust anyone. It’s a trope that’s been overused thanks to the success of Gone Girl and Girl on the Train (speaking of overused tropes, can we stop having titles with “girl” in them for awhile?) and Crooked Little Lies isn’t a particularly groundbreaking addition to the genre. But the characters are compelling and the action moves quickly (getting a book read in […]
The Girl Needs an AA Meeting.
This the third or fourth book that I’ve managed to blaze through in a couple of days. I’m not sure if I’ve just been lucky with my book selection or I’ve got amazing commitment to Sparkle Motion/CBR8. It’s difficult to read this book and not draw comparisons to Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl. Aside from the similar titles, both feature a story told from the point of view of multiple narrators and at least one narrator is unreliable. In the case of Paula Hawkins’ The Girl […]
I Think This is the Start of a Beautiful Friendship
I’ve been meaning to start the Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny for the last year. Several of my friends are huge fans and reading their reviews on Goodreads made me sure that I would enjoy this series too. For Christmas, one of the themes of the gifts I got my sister was “first book in a series” and I ended up buying her a boxed set of the first three Louise Penny books. This, of course, meant that I could read them after she […]
