The death of a reality TV star.

Like a Sister by Kellye Garrett

September 1, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

I can see how this might not be for everyone, particularly people who like their thrillers to have lots of twists and over the top stuff happening, but I thought this was a solid book. While the thriller/mystery plot had some holes in it, I very much appreciated that the character arcs were fully realized, and that our main character actually had an arc. She also had one of the strangest sidekicks I’ve ever read in a novel, and I appreciate that. Our main character […]

Well, this series took an unexpected turn

The Dead in Their Vaulted Arches by Alan Bradley

August 28, 2022 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

CBR14 BINGO: Cozy, because these books qualify as cozy mysteries, what with all the murders happening in this small village, always being discovered by an 11-year-old detective When I first met Flavia de Luce in The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, I wasn’t 100% sure whether I liked her. After a couple more books, I had warmed to her, because the girl can really grow on a person. By the time I picked up The Dead in Their Vaulted Arches, I was curious […]

The Inugami Curse (Detective Kosuke Kindaichi, #2) by Seishi Yokomizo

August 23, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

These books continue to be really good mysteries, but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to give one five stars because they’re so dated. Homophobia in this one in particular is a big issue. Fun fact: Apparently the image on the cover of this edition is fairly pervasive in Japanese culture, the way that Marilyn Monroe standing above the subway grate in her white dress is for Americans. This Seishi Yokomizo guy was KIND OF a big deal. (This book is I think his […]

Different Scandals in Different Places

A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows

August 21, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Bingo 11: Scandal A Strange and Stubborn Endurance opens with a scandal of sorts (or at least the inciting incident that gets the plot going does), and there’s a fear and use of gossip that gets brought up and/or used off and on throughout the story. There is a content warning at the beginning about the scandal which involves on-page sexual violence as well as self-harm and suicidal ideation; side note, I’m a little surprised that the one murder that does succeed before the final […]

I unexpectedly fell in love with this one day.

Drunk on All Your Strange New Words by Eddie Robson

Thanks to NetGalley and Recorded Books for the audio ARC. It hasn’t affected the content of my review. Firstly, I’m going to apologize in advance because this review might end up being the equivalent of one of those annoying YouTube comments where some genius pops in to be like “FIRST!” and sometimes they’re not even first but they’re so proud of themselves anyway. I hope I don’t descend to that level but I can’t promise anything because I had such a good time with this […]

Moonlight and the Pearler's Daughter by Lizzie Pook

August 19, 2022 by Pooja Leave a Comment

CBR 14 Bingo: Bird Birds populate the landscape of this book – and Eliza’s father is prophesied to be found in a white place surrounded by many birds. When Eliza’s father’s ship returns from a pearling expedition without him, everyone but her seems to accept that he is dead. But Eliza is certain there is more to the story, and she is determined to find him. I am rather annoyed with this book. It was so relentlessly depressing, and once I had gotten through the […]
