Antiques Roadshow, meet Murder She Wrote

March 6, 2014 by elecamel Leave a Comment

Last year my book club read A Deadly Vintage, I think the third in the Molly Doyle Mystery series. It was fun and pretty cute. A quick read with friendly characters that was easy to jump into without having read the earlier volumes of the series. It did make me want to go back and read the previous ones though. To read more of my review, head over to my blog…

Time to branch out, I think, “Mr. Castle.”

March 5, 2014 by narfna Leave a Comment

I’m not sure whether I just wasn’t in the right mood for this, or whether the gag of having tie-in novels supposedly written by a fictional author in a TV show has just run its course, but either way Deadly Heat was less fun than the last couple of installments. (It was still fun, though.) This one picks up where the last one left off, with Detective Nikki Heat embroiled in a manhunt for the turncoat spy that ordered her mother’s murder. A new case […]

Who were the homestead wives, who were the gold rush brides?

March 4, 2014 by popcultureboy 3 Comments

In which Popcultureboy is left floored by and in awe of Catton’s supreme mastery and skill as a writer and storyteller, but is ultimately forced to conclude he found the novel easier to admire than to love.  So here we are at the pinnacle of the Booker challenge for 2013, with the winning book. There were some firsts with this book lifting the Booker, as it was the longest ever book to do so with the highest page count (Catton is 28, and the book […]

#8 One of those murders where the person deserves it

March 1, 2014 by Aquillia Leave a Comment

Mrs. Boynton is a cruel, sadistic woman who takes great delight in the mental torture of her family. Their trip to the Middle East serves as even more torture, proof that her children cannot escape her clutches. When she is killed whilst visiting the archaeological site Petra, all of her family members fall under suspicion of her death and it is up to Poirot to find out the true culprit. I’m continuing my re-read of many Agatha Christie mysteries. I had remembered enjoying this one […]

Fewer demons, more elves in this one

March 1, 2014 by Malin Leave a Comment

This book is book 12 and the penultimate in The Hollows series, with several story lines that have been building throughout the series. It’s absolutely NOT the place to start. If you haven’t read these, start with Dead Witch Walking. Frankly, if you don’t know the series, you’d probably be best just skipping this review. Rachel is working security for Trent while Quen is on the West Coast. Despite her many former misgivings about working for and with the billionaire, she’s been enjoying herself, possibly a bit too […]

What happened to Harriet De Luce?

March 1, 2014 by narfna 6 Comments

Wow, that wasn’t what I was expecting AT ALL. In a good way. For me, this is the best of the series. So, fair warning, this review will be chock-a-block full of spoilers, so stay away, far far away if you don’t want to get spoiled all to hell. Usually, I try not to put spoilers (at least, ones involving twists and resolutions of the plot) in my reviews, but in this case, it’s impossible to say what I want to say without talking about […]
