I was drugged up when I wrote this.

November 28, 2018 by narfna 2 Comments

NB: I received a gratis copy of this book, but that has not affected the content of my review. This is a fact which you will quickly believe once you read the review. Thanks for my free copy, publishers!!!! I’ve been trying to write this review for a little while now, just staring at the blank screen, but I’m on some drugs right now that are making me diiiizzy*, so I apologize in advance if this review doesn’t come out as coherent as I’m thinking […]

“Holmes,” I cried. “Is it really you?”

While gathering my thoughts to start writing this review, I kept getting the feeling that this was my favorite of the Holmes story collections so far. With this feeling in mind, I moseyed on over to Goodreads to look at my status updates to try to collect evidence to back it up (I rate and do mini-reviews for every story), whereupon I found to my surprise that my reaction to most of the stories was just good, not great. It’s a solid story collection! However, only two out […]

Mysteries According to Humphrey: A hamster

July 26, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

It is usually not a good idea to start in the middle of a series. There are too many “back pieces of information” you are not privy to. Of course, for the adult reading, it is a good way to gage if the series is good. The first in a series can always be good. It sets the story up, so unless it is just plain bad, there is not a lot to complain about. But if you are picking up the series in the […]

The Pressure to Pun is Too Much, so no pun.

February 1, 2018 by NTE Leave a Comment

It’s going to be hard to review An Affair to Dismember without saying in the vein of Janet Evanovich, because that’s one thousand percent true, but it’s also so trite – it is literally on the book cover, and the Amazon review I saw of the series that made me click on the free Kindle link.  Which is kind of annoying, because they’re definitely right: I mean there’s for sure a Stephanie Plum, Bobbie Faye, name your favorite screwed up, clueless, somehow still manages to […]

“Your now is not your forever.”

First, this review is sort of temporary so I can get my thoughts out before they fade away. I’ll probably be re-reading soon. I want to have a better chance to digest it, since the first time I read it over Thanksgiving weekend, I had my mom and sister and their HGTV/Hallmark Christmas movie obsession as a constant in the background and it was very distracting. I always have these grand plans of reading and writing over Thanksgiving weekend, and it NEVER happens because my […]

Stockholm syndromed by a crappy book.

January 28, 2017 by Blingle Bells 1 Comment

It’s hard for me to know exactly what I’m reviewing when I review this book. It was my first audiobook, and the narrator was awful. Am I really reviewing the concept of audiobooks, new to me after 24 years as an avid reader? Am I reviewing the narrator, kind of? Or the book? One thing is certain: the latter two things were terrible. So I guess it really doesn’t matter. Dr. Mike Scanlon is a podiatrist serving in the Army, repairing feet blown up by […]
