Do you like Fall? Do you like snacks? Do you like being happy? Yes? Then this is the graphic novel for you.

Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell, Faith Erin Hicks

September 8, 2019 by scootsa1000 7 Comments

This was, without a doubt, the most enjoyable reading experience I’ve had this year. Every single page was a god-damned delight. Do I need to say more? OK. Well. This is Rainbow Rowell, so if you love her, you’re going to need to read this. It reminded me a lot of her short story “Midnights,” except that this is about best friends who love Halloween instead of Best Friends who love New Years Eve. Deja and Josie work at an amazing Pumpkin Patch (honestly, if […]

Bonus review: Happy New Year!

December 31, 2016 by Malin 3 Comments

I know I said yesterday that number 134 was going to be my last review of the year, but that was before I remembered that there was a Rainbow Rowell short story out there in the world that I hadn’t read. Also, it has it’s own entry on Goodreads, so even though it’s part of a bigger anthology, My True Love Gave to Me: Twelve Holiday Stories (eleven of which I have yet to read), I don’t feel reviewing it is cheating. 135 is a […]

You know that thing? When you get all excited for a sequel? And then it kinda sucks? Yeah. That.

I had high hopes for Lola. I enjoyed its prequel (of sorts), the very sweet Anna and the French Kiss, last year. I loved Stephanie Perkins’ story (It’s a Yuletide Miracle, Charlie Brown) in the short story compilation, My True Love Gave to Me. And so I was excited to finally get this from the library, after waiting what seemed like forever. But I was disappointed. This book just wasn’t as fun or cute, or sadly, even as likable. Lola is a 17-year old high […]

“It’s a tree. Trees have great grip. Their whole body is made for gripping.”

I am not one, normally, for short story collections. Inevitably there are some which are too long, and some which are too short. And some that are just, well, terrible. My True Love Gave To Me is no exception to these general rules of short story collections. I should backtrack to say that I enjoyed the majority of the stories in this collection. The authors in question are generally well liked and reviewed (as best I can tell/remember I have only read one of the […]

Just writing this makes me want to go and listen to Miss Piggy singing “Five Gold Rings….ba-dum-dum-dum”

Usually, I review my 52 books and then take a break for the rest of the year. And after this review, I plan to do so. But since this is a holiday-themed book, I figured I would write something up. My True Love Gave to Me is a book of short stories, all Christmas themed. The stories are written by an all-star team of YA champions: Holly Black, Ally Carter, Matt de la Pena, Gayle Forman, Jenny Han, David Levithan, Kelly Link, Myra McEntire, Rainbow […]
