“Maybe she is reaching out because she has sent another man to his grave prematurely. Or maybe she wants to know if I can buy eggs on the way home. Either way, I’m not picking up.”

My Sister, The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 2 Book 15/30 Objectively, this should be getting a higher rating, but I found it rather agonizing to listen to, just because of personal preference. It’s actually really smart and really well done, and I think it accomplishes exactly what it’s trying to do. I should have figured this might happen, though. Satires are love them or hate them for me. And, really, I didn’t hate this! I just sort of hated listening to it. It made me feel […]

“I am more haunted by her actions than she is.”

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

I’ve been dreading reviewing this, honestly. I feel like everyone loved this book. I didn’t love it. I didn’t hate it. For me, it was like politely – experiencing? Not quite enjoying, not quite enduring – the company of someone you aren’t quite at ease around, don’t quite get, don’t quite like, but respect enough to not want to be rude. The plot isn’t really hiding many potential spoilers. Ayoola and Korede are sisters. They live in Nigeria. There father was abusive. Their mother is […]

My oh my: a little book with a big punch (Reader’s Choice)

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

HOLY GUACAMOLE THIS BOOK IS SO GOOD. Like, so so good. I heard a lot of good things, but it was so little an unassuming it sat on my bookshelf for over a month, having snagged it from the library. The cover is intriguing, with its big bold green font, but I figured I’d get around to it. Well, one night about 20 minutes before I wanted to be asleep I figured eh, I’ll crack this one open. One hour and half of the book […]

Some Sisterly Murder

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

Bingo 13 (Pajiba) I noticed recently that this novel could actually qualify for several different squares, but I’ll be using it for Pajiba, where a review was posted 1/24/2019. I’ve had my eye on the title for a while although I’m not quite sure where I first heard about it. I’m not sure what exactly what I was expecting, but I didn’t get it, not even close. I was not really expecting to enjoy this, firstly because it’s contemporary literary fiction, and secondly it’s written […]

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

#CBR11 Bingo: Pajiba (reviewed by Kayleigh here) (Would also work for “Award winner”, “Own voices”, “Listicle”, “Cannonballer Says”, and possibly, “Far and Away”) Official book description: Korede is bitter. How could she not be? Her sister, Ayoola, is many things: the favorite child, the beautiful one, possibly sociopathic. And now Ayoola’s third boyfriend in a row is dead. Korede’s practicality is the sisters’ saving grace. She knows the best solutions for cleaning blood, the trunk of her car is big enough for a body, and she keeps […]

Nobody fights you like your own sister; nobody else knows the most vulnerable parts of you and will aim for them without mercy.

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

Reviews for this one kept popping up following its November 2018 publication. I’m a bit squeamish and while I like mystery books I don’t read horror. Pluiedenovembre assured me that this one wasn’t scary or gory so I requested it from the library. Like ASKReviews mentioned in her review of this book a few days ago, it is also a very quick read. The chapters are short and crisp, with rapid fire information. Our point of view character is Korede, a nurse in one of […]
