A protagonist who makes Nick Dunn look like Mr. Rogers

April 14, 2016 by expandingbookshelf 1 Comment

This isn’t a murder mystery. At first glance, it appears like one. On a winter evening, George Clare comes home to find his wife Catherine brutally murdered and their three-year-old daughter crying, “Mama hurt.” Of course as the husband, George jumps to the top of the cop’s suspect list. But it’s not the first tragedy to take place in their house. Just a few years before, a farmer and his wife killed themselves there, leaving three orphaned sons who might know something about Catherine’s murder. […]

In which Fat Charlie answers the door and Spider encounters flamingos.

This was a superfun experiment in re-reading a book and its sequel in the correct order for the first time. As I mentioned in my “American Gods” re-read review, the first time around, I read “Anansi Boys” first, and it was nevertheless a totally delicious ride untainted by any sort of tyrannical adherence to an orderly timeline. I think Gaiman would approve. This time around, I read them in order, although I’m keeping with this personal tradition by learning too late that there’s a short […]

Julia the jerk

March 16, 2016 by NVVN Leave a Comment

Have you ever read a book that is part of a series and wonder where you went wrong?  Do you question if you were high when you started the series and are only just now seeing things clearly?  That’s where I’m at with this fourth book in the Maine Clambake Mystery series.  I’m wondering if there was something wrong with me during the first three books or if there’s something wrong with me now.  Let’s discuss. Your main character is Julia Snowden.  Julia is living […]

Journal of Meh

March 8, 2016 by Melina Leave a Comment

Sarah Gladstone knew a bad storm was coming and so she goes to stay with her mother in the small town of Sunbury.  The storm turned out to be worse than expected and the town is cut off from the outside world with floods, downed trees, no electricity or cell towers.  This is key because during the clean up, they learn that someone has broken into the priest’s home, tossed the place and the priest is nowhere to be found.  However, journals–tons of them are […]

Gilley needs to be smacked

March 2, 2016 by NVVN Leave a Comment

MJ and her husband Heath return from vacation to find a cursed dagger is missing from their safe.  Turns out their friend Gilley loaned it to a museum because Gilley lacks sense.  Gilley is terrified of the supernatural and yet thinks it’s perfectly okay to loan a cursed dagger to a museum.  Naturally, the dagger is stolen from the museum, the ghost/demon inside of the dagger is set free and a museum worker is killed.  Nice work, Gilley! Oh, but the fun has only just […]

Gold heist or murder mystery?

February 21, 2016 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

This was another Kindle First, so I didn’t pay for it, which is great.  Abandon is a town way way up in the mountains in Colorado.  It was a mining town that eventually went bust.  The story is split between 1893 and 2009.  It’s told from a few different people’s perspectives.  The 1893 people tell the story of Abandon before it was abandoned (haha, get it?).  The 2009 people are climbing up the mountain to see the old town and maybe try to figure out […]
