The Water Trade

January 27, 2017 by kfishgirl 1 Comment

So this book is another audiobook that I borrowed from my library.  It’s narrated by a British guy, so everything sounds better.  I love love love the way he says the name of the town/district this all occurs in.  I just repeat “Robongi” over and over in my head after I’m done listening. SPOILERS AHOY! Lucie Blackman was a young, tall, blonde girl from England.  She lived a fairly normal life, and had a sister named Sophie, and a brother (whose name I can’t remember […]

Basic Witch

January 22, 2017 by Emperor Cupcake Leave a Comment

The first in Juliet Blackwell’s Witchcraft Mystery series, Secondhand Spirits reminded me a lot of a cluttered antique shop–appropriate since the main character runs a vintage clothing store in San Francisco. There were a few quality pieces, a couple of unexpected treasures, and a whole lot of random crap that it made it difficult to find what I was looking for. What’s it about? Lily Ivory (I just can’t with that name) is a powerful witch with a troubled and lonely past. After years of […]

This is the book

January 18, 2017 by Gracey the Giant 6 Comments

This is the book I read.  This is me giving the book 2.5 stars.  This is the style of writing in the book that caused me to award only 2.5 stars. This is the sentence structure the author felt would be engaging but was, for me, enraging. This is an actual paragraph from the book: This is your brother with the gun in his mouth. This is your brother forming a cauliflower head on the carpet with his blood. This is his wife, hearing the shot downstairs in […]

Break down the self, offer yourself up like dust to the universe.

In the Cannonball Read Facebook group, someone awesome posted an article called “The best books of 2016 list you get when you combine 36 “Best Books of 2016” lists.” The Girls is 6th on that list, appearing in 10 of the 36 “Best Books of 2016” lists combined for the “ultimate list.” It’s okay. Here’s what it has going for it: it’s completely real. Here’s what it has against it: it’s not new. The Girls is the story of an older woman reminiscing about that […]

Triple Cannonballing with Tana French

December 28, 2016 by narfna 23 Comments

It’s almost ridiculous how easy she makes it look, writing a book this good. I don’t even know what to say anymore about her books. They are all just so, so good. And the way she jumps from character to character each book gives her room to play around with different structures and themes, and yet still stay within the framework of a murder mystery novel. I love murder mystery novels, but I don’t love these books because of the mysteries (although I don’t think […]

To run a shtinker, you have to see the broken heart inside the deadest pan.

My first Chabon! OOOOOOF. WOW. Holy crap, you guys, did you know that his prose is exceptional and that there’s no exposition, and that he creates an utterly believable alternate timeline and a narrative that ramps up until you’re flying down the other side of the rollercoaster with no brakes? Are they all like this? Is my brain going to melt? How have I missed out this my entire adult life? Full disclosure: it took me a really long time to gather momentum with “The […]
