True crime at its juicy best

July 19, 2017 by Lindzgrl Leave a Comment

This is my first Ann Rule book, which is probably a somewhat scandalous confession for someone who considers herself a murderino. The truth is I hadn’t really read any true crime other than In Cold Blood before becoming a My Favorite Murder fan, I more just watched a lot of true crime shows and movies (The Betty Broderick story anyone!? Anyone? Fist bump? No? Okay.) I obviously would have preferred to start out with The Stranger Beside me, but that wasn’t available from my audiobook […]

I hate myself a bit for getting sucked into this one….

July 17, 2017 by kella Leave a Comment

Ok…after wanting to throw book #1 across the room multiple times, this was a bit of an improvement. It is not so much a sequel, as it is a spinoff, which was interesting.  It didn’t resolve any of my questions from book 1, but at least I didn’t have to deal with the biggest asshole character ever written anymore. The premise in this book is so unbelievable that I rolled my eyes more than once, because, COME ON. Our detective is called to a murder […]

Deep wells of loneliness

July 12, 2017 by esme 3 Comments

Silas Jones and Larry Ott are two sides of a coin in a small Mississippi town. They meet as children, where Larry is the town comic book reading, horror aficionado weirdo and Silas is the new kid – poor, black, and new to country life. They become friends for a time, bonding over proximity, loneliness, and a shared love of nature and horror. Over time, however, Silas moves on to sports and other friends. Fast forward to adulthood, where ‘Scary’ Larry is a pariah because […]

If Only the Truth were that this was a good book!

July 5, 2017 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

So… I read a short story by Adam Croft, and reviewed it here earlier in June.  I read the short first to see if I liked the author’s writing.  I guess at the time I thought it was ok, because I went on to read this book.  I went back and read my review after finishing Only the Truth, and saw that I really didn’t like the short!  At first I wasn’t really sure why I went ahead and read the book.  Then I read […]

Who is the kind worth killing?

July 3, 2017 by kfishgirl 2 Comments

I listened to this as an audiobook, and once again the voice talent elevated the story. There were actually four separate actors that read this story. People kept dying, so two narrators had to be replaced 😁. The story starts out with two people meeting at an airport bar in London. Their flight back to Boston was postponed, so they started drinking and talking. Ted, our main character is some sort of business guy that just found out his wife is cheating on him with […]

We’ll always be troubled by how things are—that’s how it stands with the difficult gift of consciousness.

By the time this came off the wait-list at the library, I had completely forgotten why my friend had recommended it to me, other than the obvious, which is that I love me some Ian McEwan. And what’s interesting to report now that I’ve read Nutshell is that I may have grown out of my McEwan faze, because this checked a LOT of my boxes but ultimately didn’t blow me out of the water. Which is not to say that this isn’t a beautiful book, […]
