(not exactly) The Prime of Mr. Jackson Brodie

Big Sky by Kate Atkinson

December 30, 2019 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

It’s been nine years since we’ve last seen Jackson Brodie, and in those nine years a lot has changed. So much has changed that I found myself lost a few times- am I supposed to remember this? Is that name supposed to mean something? Is this kid important? Jackson seemed a bit adrift at times as well, but I suppose that was more intentional than my foggy memory. The world has changed for Jackson. His career, his family, his car, his dog- it’s all changing. […]

So. Much. Drowning.

Into The Water by Paula Hawkins

December 30, 2019 by kella Leave a Comment

I felt just ok about Hawkins’ The Girl on the Train, so I expected similar results from this book. I think my low expectations helped me enjoy this more than I thought I would (not MUCH more, but still, every little bit counts?). Into The Water is set in a small town in England that is home to the Drowning Pool, a section of river that has seen the deaths of many women over the years – some by murder, some by suicide. The story […]

I’m not sure if I liked this book or not.

Unspeakable Things by Jess Lourey

December 18, 2019 by kfishgirl 1 Comment

This is a strange book.  It’s basically an adult thriller told through the eyes of a pre-teen girl.  At times it’s hard to remember that the main character and the voice of the story is only 12.  At other times it’s glaringly obvious. There are basically two stories here.  They both hold approximately equal weight throughout the book.  Unfortunately only one is truly resolved at the end. Cassie is a 12 year old girl in Minnesota who lives on a farm.  Her sister is about […]

This guy sees dead people

Forgotten Bones (Dead Remaining Book 1) by Vivian Barz

December 10, 2019 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

This book was a Kindle first read I believe, so I didn’t pay any money for it.  Thankfully, I liked it! The story is split into two distinct story lines for the first (approximately) half of the book.  Eventually they come together, but let’s stick to the split stories for now. There’s actually a totally different story at the very beginning.  There’s a couple driving home from a bar, and the lady gets frisky.  They end up crashing into a telephone pole, and someone finds […]

Of course the guy on trial for murder didn’t do it!

Dead Center (Andy Carpenter Book 5) Kindle Edition by David Rosenfelt

December 10, 2019 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

This is book five of the Andy Carpenter series.  I borrowed the audiobook (on CD) from my library.  I’m reading this series in whatever order I can grab the books.  I think I read 1, 2, and 8 already.  I have books 4 and 6 at my house from the library, but I just DO NOT read real books anymore.  Especially hardcovers – they’re so heavy!  I’m generally a laying down reader, and real books tend to fall on my face.  I like to read […]

A book I did not expect to hate.

Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes

November 20, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

I think I mostly hated this? Yeah. I did. And I don’t really know why. I liked but didn’t love The Shining Girls when I read it a couple of years ago. I assumed I would similarly like not love this. And it does sound creepy and intriguing. A boy turns up dead in Detroit, his top half attached to the dead body of a deer. There are multiple narrators, including a detective on the case, a teenager, a journalist, and a homeless man. But […]
