“When the mind’s filter disappeared, the big picture disappeared with it. There was no forest, only trees. At its worst, there were no trees, either. Just bark.”

The reviews on Uncle Stevie’s latest tome have been mostly similar: a great, suspenseful first half, telling a story about a police investigation into the brutal murder of a child by a seemingly innocent man…and a less successful second half, filled with supernatural elements and a character from earlier novels. Most reviews have pointed out that the story presented in the first half were quite enough for a full novel: local good citizen arrested for horrific crime, town turns against him and his family, regardless […]

End of Watch

April 26, 2017 by Mim Leave a Comment

End of Watch.  Once again, I’m sorry to say that there’s not much good to be said about this one.  It’s a real downer, and I waited several weeks after I read it to write this review, because I didn’t want to ruin it for anyone.  Problem is, I also don’t want to have to reread it, and unlike some other books, my head doesn’t want to hold on to it.  My major issues were how irritating it was that King returned to drugging people […]

Damn you, Uncle Stevie. I’m not ready for these books to end.

June 21, 2016 by scootsa1000 Leave a Comment

The adventures of Retired Detective Bill Hodges and his friends have come to an end, and I’m sad. I didn’t expect a whole lot when Uncle Stevie announced that he was working on a trilogy of mystery novels a few years ago. But I adored Mr. Mercedes, and couldn’t wait to find out what happened next. And I really liked 99% of Finders Keepers…it was only that 1% about stupid Brady Hartsfield moving things around with his mind that bugged me. So, I was kind of irked when […]

Constant Reader liked this one. Mostly. Until that stuff at the end.

As you are well aware by now, Uncle Stevie and I have a long, ongoing, somewhat unhealthy relationship. He writes, I read. No matter the length or the quality (hello, cocaine years), I was — and still am — there for him. I’ve read pretty much everything, and lots of times I’ve read stuff more than once. His short story collections? Automatic re-reads. Anything to do with The Dark Tower? I’m all over it. I’ll read it until I get every single cross-reference. And now, […]

Stephen King does a crime thriller.

I wasn’t planning on reading Mr. Mercedes this year. It just sort of happened. And by “it just sort of happened,” I mean that I was looking for audiobooks to feed my audiobook addiction, and saw this was available and then clicked “download,” even though I knew it wasn’t on my list and I would be using it as one of my twenty-five freebies, because I just can’t resist free candy, dammit. I can’t really say I regretted it, though. The universe seems to have […]

Mr Mercedes

September 16, 2014 by Alli Leave a Comment

Well I have 8 pending book reviews to write so I figured today would be a good time to get started. I will keep this short and sweet to get some of my pending list completed. I read this book when I was on Vacation in Jamaica back in June and honestly don’t recall too much about it. I always enjoy Stephen King books, but this one was really more of junk food, I ate it up quickly and forgot about it just as quickly. […]
