Flipping Forward Twisting Backward by Alma Fullerton

June 28, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When I say Flipping Forward Twisting Backward by Alma Fullerton has a classic feeling story with a little bite, I mean the story might feel a bit “old hat” in today’s themes that are a bit more mature, or “updated.” What I mean is that this book feels like something I would have read from ages (at least 8) to a (younger) 12.  And when I was growing up, there were the Big Four Themes. The first was divorce, the second a friend having diabetes, the […]

Mom and Me…

I Wish I Could Say "Thank You" by Yukari Takinami

May 31, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

After reading GentleRain’s review of I Wish I Could Say “Thank You” by Yukari Takinami, I researched and found that while my bookstore could order me a copy, I decided that I would go the interlibrary loan route. I figured I could purchase a copy if I enjoyed it at a later time. And I probably will do that, but instead of keeping it for myself, I will donate it to my local library. I think others might be interested in this not easy to […]

The historical and personal flood of events that lead a woman to find herself

Feeding Ghosts: A Graphic Memoir by Tessa Hulls

April 22, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Feeding Ghosts: A Graphic Memoir by Tessa Hulls is an intense read, with several triggers. It is not meant for the sensitive reader, or someone who is just starting graphic novels. The style of illustrations are both what makes and breaks things. The black and white gives the tone but everything can blend together, especially when the author uses words as the illustrations or within the actual image. A few fourth wall breaks can stop the flow of stories, but overall this is an interesting […]

I am The Best! At what, not sure yet…..

Getting Dizzy by Shea Fontana

July 13, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was surprised at the graphic novel, Getting Dizzy. I expected it to be “whiny” and young. However, while it deals with teen angst and the “good enough/not good enough” trope, the not-so-super-superhero story was  not overly cliché. The ending was a tad rushed, the mother a bit too forgiving, but overall it was a pleasant read. The aged 10 to 13-young 14 will enjoy it.  Shea Fontana has a diverse cast, and while there is a “love interest” he, or that potential storyline, is […]

Why Is Everybody Yelling? Growing Up in My Immigrant Family? by Marisabina Russo

June 11, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I had a small roller coaster ride of thoughts and feelings about the graphic memoir, Why Is Everybody Yelling? Growing Up in My Immigrant Family? At first, I thought, “Sounds fun.” Then, “Huh, what’s going on?” And “This is slow reading.” With, “Oh, yeah digging this, getting meaty.” Along with several, “If this was fiction nobody would allow such a stereotype!” And finally, “Well that was a ride. And that afterwards was a good roundup.”   Our narrator, Cookie is “the lucky one” of her […]

What the flying monkeys did I just read?

Big Girl, Small Town by Michelle Gallen

November 17, 2020 by BlackRaven 5 Comments

There no traditional action in Big Girl, Small Town. Yet, you are drawn into the book from page one. Michelle Gallen made me fall in love with a fictional character. She made me see myself in her. She made me want to root for this character who (on the surface) is not an overly likable person. Or at least, not at first. You watch as Majella (our heroine) live her life. Or what passes for living in a Northern Ireland town after “The Troubles” have […]
