Not as fluffy as the tv show but still a fun ride

Cocaine Blue by Kerry Greenwood

January 21, 2021 by pixifer 2 Comments

Needing some light entertainment, I decided to rewatch Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. It’s a delightful show and the rewatch made me curious about the books.  Phryne, carrying the cocktail, decanted it unobtrusively into a potted palm against which she had no personal grudge, and hoped that it would not give her away by dying too rapidly. Content warning: the book, and my review, mention sexual assault.  Cocaine Blues is the first book in the series. Miss Phryne Fisher is a wealthy socialite in 1920s England. […]

The Divine Phryne…

January 31, 2016 by ChainedVase 4 Comments

After my re-read of Amelia Peabody, I was in the mood for a historical mystery with a little more spice, so what better than Miss Fisher? Like all red-blooded humans, I’m pretty obsessed with Phryne. For those who may not know (how? why? examine your life choices, people) the Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries are an Australian-set series of books about a lady detective in 1928. She is fabulous, adventurous and super sexy. There are also 3 seasons of TV based on the series. (Netflix. Watch […]

Phryne Fisher #3

January 19, 2015 by Walking Widdershins 2 Comments

Phryne and Dot, her maid, are traveling to Ballarat via train (no spoilers here, folks). But there’s one problem – there’s a bad smell and everyone in first class is passed out. Luckily, our hero(ine) Phryne stays awake long enough to shoot out a window, alert the engineer, and rescue most of her fellow passengers. Well, except one – the mean old lady who spent the whole time complaining and being nasty to her daughter. They were in the first car, where the chloroform was […]

Phryne Fisher Part Deux

January 5, 2015 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

A few months have passed since the conclusion of Cocaine Blues. In the interim, Phryne has been burnishing her reputation as a private investigator in Melbourne. She’s also found a house, and is in the process of moving out of the hotel and settling permanently in Australia. A very high strung lady approaches Phryne with a commission – she thinks her son is going to kill his father, and she wants Phryne to stop it. So Phryne goes off to the son’s flying school (planes […]

Phryne Fisher Book 1

December 30, 2014 by Walking Widdershins 1 Comment

I had actually heard of these stories through Go Fug Yourself – they were discussing the fashions worn by the main character on the television show based on the books. So I had to check this out, and I was not disappointed. I love a good classic mystery, especially jazzy ones. Unfortunate titles notwithstanding. Miss Phryne Fisher is well ahead of her time. After she solves a robbery at a dinner party (embarrassing the culprit to boot), she is asked to travel to Australia to […]
