“They were supposed to grow up with their hands in each other’s pockets, compensating for one another’s weaknesses, encouraging one another’s strengths.”

Middlegame (Alchemical Journeys, #1) by Seanan McGuire

This was my first Seanan McGuire book, which is a little unbelievable, both because she writes in genres I love, and because she writes so very prolifically. And I started with a really good one. I’m not against spoilers and frequently spoil myself for things, but I went into this book almost completely unspoiled, even for the premise, and I think that’s the way to go. The book is so weird it’s almost impossible to really sum up in a blurb anyway. So, how to […]

This Was Exactly My Kind of Weird.

Middlegame by Seanan McGuire

My heart goes out to Seanan McGuire this year, really it does. As I mentioned in a previous post, this year’s Best Novel nominees for the Hugo Awards was really strong, and if it were any other year, I think Middlegame would have taken the crown. It’s one of my favourite books that I’ve ever read from Seanan McGuire – nearly beating out some of her best Toby Daye novels too. It did score a Locus award though, so I hope that’s some consolidation, […]

Alice in Wonderland meets The Wizard of Oz with Alchemists

Middlegame by Seanan McGuire

I’ve had Middlegame on my TBR shelf about since it came out and I’m just now getting to it. I think it really did help me to have read several other things by Seanan McGuire, and also to know that she considers this her most technical work to date. There are several parallel stories set up as well as some time bending woven into the story, and for me it mostly works. The main plotline is that of Roger and Dodger, twins created by mostly […]

This Book Was Too All Over the Place

Middlegame by Seanan McGuire

October 15, 2019 by Classic 2 Comments

I DNFed this book at page 103 last night. Life is too short for a book that is making your brain seep from your ears. There was too much being thrown at me and none of it made sense. McGuire writes this book with no world building so you are just thrown into a book where alchemy is a thing and so is putting body parts together to make a person. I can’t even get into this split soul thing and what that means and […]
