Am I a masochist?

Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

September 7, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

This is one that collected dust on my to-read list for years, forgotten about, until I saw a review here recently. Upon seeing that review, I immediately put in a hold request for it at the library, even though they only had a large print version, randomly, which always makes me feel self-conscious (I don’t need the large print, I swear!). I’ve barely listened to the author’s music, but the title, and the book’s acclaim, had me quite curious. You know, because I’m a masochist, […]

Eating Your Grief

Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

September 2, 2022 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Reading Crying in H Mart, Michelle Zauner’s examination of her relationship with her mother in the aftermath of her early death from cancer, it was impossible for me not to psychoanalyze the author and eventually it became impossible for not to psychoanalyze myself as well. In all it made this book about a necessarily heavy topic a rather burdensome read and not one I particularly enjoyed. Zauner, the lead singer of the pop band Japanese Breakfast, grew up in Oregon with her Caucasian father and […]

The bond between mother and daughter, the joy of shared food, and the devastating loss of a parent – CBR14 Bingo: Heart

Crying in H-Mart: A Memoir by Michelle Zauner

CBR14 Bingo: “Heart” –  In this heartbreaking memoir, Michelle Zauner shares her love for her mother and their connection through a love of food. Last year I heard on NPR an interview with Zauner, a Korean American, when she released her debut book, Crying in H-Mart: A Memoir.  I was instantly interested in small part because I too shop at H-Mart, a Korean grocery chain in the United States.  Then I became engrossed by listening to Zauner talk about her mother’s death and food.  I […]

“Don’t turn away, I’m still awake”

Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

March 24, 2022 by booktrovert Leave a Comment

This was a beautiful tribute to a mother, written by a grieving daughter. You might be a fan of Japanese Breakfast – but even if you haven’t enjoyed the indie-pop band, you could still get a great deal of pleasure from reading this memoir. I say pleasure with an asterisk – as suggested in the title, this book will most likely inspire tears. Michelle Zauner’s mother died in 2014, when she was 25. This book shares stories about her childhood with a Korean mother and […]

Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

I honestly don’t know what to say about this beyond the fact that it was raw, emotional, and just a lovely memoir. Michelle Zauner does a great job of showing us readers all the ways that her mother and food impacted her life. And she provides insights into her mother’s family, as well as her mother and father. This book honestly had me missing my mother the entire time I read it. And as I thought of her, I also realized how much food came […]

“The tastes she wanted me to remember. The feelings she never wanted me to forget.”

Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

I read this in an emotionally complicated state, which probably fits with the emotional complexity of the book itself. My mom got me this for Christmas, and then I finished it today after she let me know she’d fainted and was in the emergency room. So reading a book about a mother dying when I wasn’t sure what was going on with my own mom was a recipe for some stressful reading. (My mom is probably fine, by the way, I don’t think she’s in […]
