A First Lady to Remember

Becoming by Michelle Obama

December 1, 2019 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

Michelle Obama’s Becoming was an inspirational memoir to experience. I gave the audiobook to my mom for Christmas, but ended up borrowing and reading it myself! I had very high expectations for this book. It ended up being more of an emotional journey than I imagined. The Former First Lady recounts her childhood and her family. She goes into great detail of all the sacrifices her parents made for her and her brother in Chicago. My parents are both from nearby Indiana and  Chicago is […]

“I’m an ordinary person who found herself on an extraordinary journey”

Becoming by Michelle Obama

Bingo Square: Far and Away Michelle Obama takes us on the journey through her life, from her happy childhood on the South Side of Chicago, through her college years at Princeton and Harvard, her early career as a lawyer and her yearning for something more, to meeting her husband at her law firm when he was a law student and she was his mentor. We get to see them fall in love and weather some distance apart, as well as the struggles she felt throughout […]

Michelle Obama is my hero

Becoming by Michelle Obama

September 3, 2019 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

I have loved Michelle Obama for years and Becoming just scratched this itch.  This woman! Hard working, humble, gracious, driven, smart, caring and full of so much integrity.  She almost makes me want to be American (and then I remember the health care issues and hug my Canadian passport like a security blanket).  Had Hillary Clinton won the last election I might have read Obama’s memoir in a different light- inspiring yes, but in a world where inspiring things were still relatively common.  Since the […]

Worth all the praise it has been given…

Becoming by Michelle Obama

CBR11 Bingo – Reader’s Choice (in place of Science)   I’ll admit that despite the hype surrounding this book, I initially had little interest in this memoir. It was a ‘meh, I’m sure I’ll get around to it someday, but it’s not near the top of my TBR pile’. I’m thinking it’s partially because I’m not a huge memoir person, partially because I’m not American, and partially because American politics makes my blood boil a little bit (no offence, eh?). But more and more people (specifically […]

CBR11Bingo: Listicle

Becoming by Michelle Obama

Back from vacation and back to reviewing! Not that there was any chance I wouldn’t read Michelle Obama’s incredibly well-reviewed memoir Becoming, but I do love that Barack Obama listed it as one of his favorite books for 2018 (Listicle!). It’s so good, and while I listened to the audio book and highly recommend that format for the lovely experience that is Michelle Obama’s voice, I also perused the hardback copy (thanks Caitlin_D!) and the pictures included there are great. “For me, becoming isn’t about arriving somewhere […]

My new best friend

Becoming by Michelle Obama

June 23, 2019 by Sophia 2 Comments

I’ve decided that Michelle Obama is on the top of my list of people I’d like to sit next to on an airplane. Chris Hadfield is also on that list, and Barack Obama as well–although Michelle comes out on top. I’d obviously heard about Michelle Obama’s book Becoming (2018) when it first came out, but it took me awhile to get around to it. I already had a long reading list, and I do tend to avoid political books. I picked up this one because Obama is […]
