She hurries from the house, in a coat too heavy for the weather.

The Hours by Michael Cunningham

May 14, 2020 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

I’ve read two of Michael Cunningham’s novels now (along with a short story collection) and he really does like three storylines in three different timelines (all connected by a literary link). Or least this book and Specimen Days share these aspects. I am obviously very late to reading this one; it had a moment to be sure in winning the Pulitzer Prize and being made into a movie and winning many awards there too. I’ve not seen the movie either. The story involves three storylines: Virginia Woolf […]

Short story review dump (Part II)

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

Little Man by Michael Cunningham

Escape from New York by Zadie Smith

Alan Bean Plus Four by Tom Hanks

Miss Marple Tells a Story by Agatha Christie

Accident by Agatha Christie

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman (5 stars) Published in 1892, The Yellow Wallpaper tells the story of a woman, the narrator, suffering from depression. The treatment imposed on her by her husband is bed rest, and she is largely confined to a room with Yellow Wallpaper. Instead of easing her turmoil, deeper psychological issues manifest, and she is eventually driven mad by the confinement. This is an utterly haunting depiction of mental illness compounded by a deeply patriarchal society that sought to protect […]

Some Intriguing Potential, But I Felt So Little

By Nightfall by Michael Cunningham

July 28, 2019 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

CBR11 Bingo Square: Rainbow Flag Truth be told, for the Rainbow Flag square I was hoping to read Home at the End of the World by Michael Cunningham (is the movie adaptation with Colin Farrell worth watching? I didn’t know this existed and well, Mr. Farrell is a big draw for me, I must admit), but sadly our local library didn’t have that novel. However, they DID have By Nightfall, and no matter the subject, Michael Cunningham is still LGBT+, and I DO have a […]

This is how you lose her – Fairy Tale Edition

A Wild Swan and Other Tales by Michael Cunningham

February 4, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Usually calling a collection of short stories “tales” or anything other than “stories” is a bad sign for me. It means the author is “doing” something, and too often, that’s not a good thing. Michael Cunningham wrote The Hours. It won a bunch of prizes. He also wrote a few other books that I have generally liked. Specimen Days is a weird kind of triptych novel set against New York with connections to Walt Whitman and terrorism and cyborgs. And I really liked it. I did not […]
