Hell for Haller

The Law of Innocence by Michael Connelly

May 2, 2021 by enaj Mcbob Leave a Comment

For some reason this has been sat on my bedside table since Christmas.  Normally when I get the new Michael Connelly, I devour it immediately but for some reason this one was put to one side and I read other things first.  That all changed yesterday when I picked up the book and read it in one sitting. Connelly is probably best known for his Harry Bosch novels, and it scares me to realise how long I have been reading them.  He is the only […]

Crime Spree

Skin Deep by Sung J. Woo

The Concrete Blonde by Michael Connelly

The Cruelest Month by Louise Penny

Hell in the Heartland: Murder, Meth and the Case of Two Missing Girls by Jax Miller

Later by Stephen King

March 14, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

I binged a lot of crime fiction (with one non-fictional exception) as there was a lot of traffic on my already long commute this week, allowing me to synergize eyeball reading with audio. Plus I took off the weekend so I had some extra time… Skin Deep 3 stars So rare, entertaining and enjoyable to have a transracial adoptee as a protagonist. While author Sung J. Woo doesn’t lean too hard on Siobhan’s background, he weaves it in to make her a fully realized person. The […]

I’m just getting into the Bosch series…

The Black Echo by Michael Connelly

The Black Ice by Michael Connelly

February 2, 2021 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

So apparently the fictional detective Harry Bosch has been around almost as long as I have.  The Black Echo was published in 1992.  I mean I was born in 1981, so it’s basically the same thing!  Anyway, I didn’t know about him for a while.  He was actually in another book I read by Michael Connelly a few years ago, as there’s apparently a Harry Bosch Universe!  He was an old man in that book though. Harry Bosch is a fairly young man in this […]

Satisfaction Guaranteed

Lost Light by Michael Connelly

March 19, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

For my part, I like picking around the edges of the Harry Bosch catalogue, either when I need a Los Angeles tale or a mind-numbing read. I don’t usually go for airport paperback fare but Michael Connelly has always felt like a cut above. I don’t mean that to condescend anyone who enjoys the James Pattersons and Jeffrey Deavers of the world. But for me, Connelly has always felt slightly above their level, with just enough sophistication to feel refined yet not too much to […]

The Crossing` by Michael Connelly

February 9, 2020 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

The Crossing is the 18th Harry Bosch novel, and in this installment we catch him 6 months into his forced retirement from the LAPD.  When Harry gets a call from his half-brother, Mickey Haller (the Lincoln Lawyer) asking Harry to take a look into one of his cases, Harry is torn between residual loyalty to the police force and ensuring justice is done.  Harry quickly becomes convinced that Haller’s client is innocent, and joins the dark side (legal defence) in a race to find the […]

Truth is Not Always Freeing

The Last Coyote by Michael Connelly

February 3, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

I’ve never followed a linear pattern with the Harry Bosch series. Trunk Music was my first read in it and I grabbed that one specifically because I liked the plot summary. It’s still the best one by far. The Black Echo is an uninspired mishmash of cop novel cliches. Angel’s Flight and The Wrong Side of Goodbye are fine for what they are. Rene Ballard seems like she may be an interesting character; The Late Show is a good introductory novel for her and not much else in terms of gripping mystery. Connelly is […]
