Para siempre. Para sempre.

When Javi Dumped Mari by Mia Sosa

June 24, 2025 by Emmalita 1 Comment

It took me a ridiculously long time to realize that When Javi Dumped Mari is a riff on When Harry Met Sally. To be fair, to me, the only part of the movie that really stuck with me were the scenes with Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby. I really enjoyed When Javi Dumped Mari. I’ve liked all the Mia Sosa books I’ve read, but I loved this one. It is funny and heartfelt. I loved the ups and downs of the friendship between Mari and Javi, and between Mari […]

“Listen, there are different ways of getting closure and one of those ways might be to make someone miserable for the sake of satisfying your petty soul.”

The Worst Best Man by Mia Sosa

April 13, 2023 by Malin Leave a Comment

When wedding planner Carolina “Lina” Santos was mere moments from her own wedding, the best man, the groom’s younger brother came to tell her that his brother had cold feet and would not be showing up to the ceremony. Since that moment, Lina has kept a very tight check on her emotions and is now proud of her reputation as trusted, efficient, and very unflappable  She obviously doesn’t want anyone to know about her own wedding disaster a few years back.  So it’s not all […]

fake dating, but a great relationship

Wedding Crasher by Mia Sosa

June 4, 2022 by wicherwill 4 Comments

Sigh herein lies the risk when I don’t write reviews soon after reading a novel. I clearly liked this book, but I can’t remember enough about it to write a proper review. I’ll rely a bit on the review of the incomparable Emmalita, on whose advice I read this to begin with, to jog my memory… I think I enjoyed the interaction between Solange and Dean more than I liked their set up. It’s hard to do a fake dating premise that doesn’t come off […]

“Stranger things have happened,” I say. “Most of them in the last month.”

The Wedding Crasher by Mia Sosa

March 10, 2022 by Emmalita 6 Comments

I really enjoyed this contemporary fake dating romance set in and around Washington DC. The Wedding Crasher is Mia Sosa’s follow up to The Worst Best Man. Solange Pereira agrees to help her cousin at a wedding and inadvertently becomes the main attraction when she overhears the bride profess her love to a man who is not the groom. Dean isn’t heartbroken about being left at the alter. It’s disappointing though. He had hoped to get life partner ticked off his to-do list, but he wasn’t in […]

“There’s room for different kinds of greatness. Even if you cry doing it.”

The Worst Best Man by Mia Sosa

December 26, 2021 by Sophia Leave a Comment

Like many of the books I’ve read this year, I found The Worst Best Man by Mia Sosa on NPR’s Best Books of 2020 List. This one didn’t end up being one of my favorites, but I remember reading it quickly and being entertained. Although there were a couple of problems with the book, there was plenty to like as well. Carolina Santos, or Lina, is a first-generation Brazilian-American, and a fantastic wedding planner. Unfortunately, she’s just found out that she’s losing her office space for her […]

Thrilling Tales – 2/5 Stars I’ve read this book twice previously and more or less liked a lot of the stories. But this reread was pretty sour for a few reasons. The story collection is ostensibly a genre collection of adventure stories posed off of Michael Chabon’s childhood of reading such stories. There’s probably references in the introduction to Edgar Rice Burroughs and Edgar Wallace and other Edgars. And so, when I bought and read this story in college, I felt more or less that […]
