But what happens next?

After Hello by Mhairi McFarlane

February 12, 2021 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I slid After Hello (2017) by Mhairi McFarlane into my reading pile as a little break. It’s a short novella and a follow-up to another McFarlane romance novel, You Had Me at Hello. Rachel and Ben didn’t have much time together at the end of the first book when they finally got together. After Hello allows them a slightly longer happily ever after. However, it’s hard to have a novel with no obstacles to overcome, so Rachel and Ben do face some challenges in this second story. Rachel and Ben […]

“Do nothing, and nothing happens. Life is about decisions.”

You Had Me At Hello by Mhairi McFarlane

January 9, 2021 by Sophia Leave a Comment

My old friend from school introduced me to Mhairi McFarlane’s books. McFarlane writes contemporary romance novels that don’t fit the typical romance formula. It usually takes longer for the characters to get together, and there is more emphasis on friends and family. I started with her latest novel, If I Never Met You (2020) before quickly jumping into Don’t You Forget About Me (2019). I thoroughly enjoyed both of these books, so it didn’t take long before I picked up another one by McFarlane. You Had Me At Hello (2014) is […]

Definitely my favorite new (to me) author

Don't You Forget About Me by Mhairi McFarlane

December 15, 2020 by Sophia 1 Comment

I enjoyed If I Never Met You so much that I knew I was going to read another book by Mhairi McFarlane very soon. And it didn’t take long before I picked up Don’t You Forget About Me (2019). I was not disappointed. McFarlane is on top of my list of favorite romance authors at the moment. Lucas and Georgina were high school sweethearts. Their burgeoning love is catalogued in the first chapter, and it is so sweet and innocent. The two are put together for a project at school, […]

“Being with the wrong person is lonelier than being on your own.”

If I Never Met You by Mhairi McFarlane

December 12, 2020 by Sophia 1 Comment

My friend recommended If I Never Met You (2020) by Mhairi McFarlane. She said that it was a good, fun romance that involved lawyers in their thirties. Since we are both lawyers that are getting older every day, she enjoyed it and she thought I would as well. And I really did. This is definitely my favorite romance of the year, and it was even more enjoyable for me because I had no expectations coming into it. Laurie Watkinson has been with her partner Dan for half […]

A fake relationship that works!

If I never Met You by Mhairi McFarlane

November 27, 2020 by Nart Leave a Comment

I’m a sucker for a well told fake relationship trope. It is one of these story format that is incredibly hard to get right because of how ludicrous the very idea is, at least if you’re past the age of making decisions with a mind addled with teenage hormones.  The set up is key to the believability, and McFarlane nails it.  Plot: sort of boring woman works for regressive, sexist company. She has been immune to a lot of the really nasty stuff that goes […]

Here’s Looking at You

Here's Looking at You by Mhairi McFarlane

December 26, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

So this was very cute and also sad at parts. I loved how McFarlane pretty much has you disliking the hero for a good portion of this book (who wouldn’t?) before allowing him to grow on you as he did the heroine. I thought the book was very good at showing how damaging school can be to those who were and are bullied. I felt for Anna so much. And I have to say that Anna and her relationship with her sister was heart-warming. I […]
