“The things we do to avoid difficult things are often worse than the difficult thing.”

Just Last Night by Mhairi McFarlane

April 8, 2022 by Nart 1 Comment

An emotional read about grief, friendship, and learning to move on from pain. Emily Henry reviewed it as a book she wished she’d have written herself, only then she wouldn’t have been able to enjoy reading it, if that gives you a sense of the pacing and narrative structure of the book. Plot: Eve has a close knit friend group – her best friend Susie, her mate Justin, and Ed, the guy she’s been in love with since she was 17, who has been dating […]

A little disappointing…

It's Not Me, It's You by Mhairi McFarlane

February 12, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

Mhairi McFarlane has become one of my favorite romance authors. I’ve read a number of her books, and I’m working through her whole collection. I ended up buying It’s Not Me, It’s You (2015) because it was not available at my library. I’ve always enjoyed McFarlane’s writing even though the English slang sometimes confounds me, but this one was a little disappointing. Delia Moss has a job that seems very much like The Office except there is no Jim around to make it bearable. Yet she enjoys her life […]

have I perhaps found a must read author?

Who’s That Girl? by Mhairi McFarlane

December 30, 2021 by wicherwill 1 Comment

Content warnings: suicide of parent (off screen, described in context of mental illness) Although it wasn’t a specific recommendation for this book, thank you to Sophia for the reminder rec for McFarlane! There are authors of the romance genre who people deem “must reads”–Jasmine Guillory and Courtney Milan come to mind immediately. There are also other authors that I have deemed “must reads” who I then get disappointed by–I thought T.J. Klune might be it but have had to shelve him. E.K. Johnston I’ll read, but so far she’s been a three star […]

Kissing the groom on his wedding day is not the best idea

Who's That Girl? by Mhairi McFarlane

December 20, 2021 by Sophia 1 Comment

I finished Just Last Night, but I apparently didn’t have my fill of Mhairi McFarlane, so I immediately picked up Who’s That Girl? (2016) in order to appreciate a little more of her writing. Like all of her books I’ve read, I enjoyed this one as well. McFarlane writes complex, emotional, fun, and entertaining romance novels. She includes some dark topics in realistic ways that make her characters feel more real and relatable. I plan on reading all of her books eventually. Edie is attending the wedding of […]

“There’s shock and then there’s grief, and there’s the simple tiring unending chore of life afterward.”

Just Last Night by Mhairi McFarlane

December 19, 2021 by Sophia 7 Comments

I have become a big fan of Mhairi McFarlane, and although I haven’t yet made it through her entire repertoire, I’m making progress. So, when I saw that Just Last Night (2021), McFarlane’s latest book was available, I snatched it up. I love McFarlane’s writing (even though she uses so many English idioms, I sometimes have a hard time understanding her). Although this wasn’t my favorite romantic story of hers, I’m very glad I read it. Eve is the main character. She is one of a quartet […]

Cute romance with deftly handled depth

Just Last Night by Mhairi McFarlane

May 17, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Content warning: descriptions of [past abuse] Adam Driver, patron saint of ugly hot, is definitely the mental image I had in mind for Fin, who I assume is the cartoon dude on the cover. This book was…not what I was expecting and a pretty lovely ride (ha) nonetheless. In my mind, what makes for a good romance novel is a proper blend of growth and tropes which together “earn” the HEA. McFarlane appears to have the formula on lock and so is able to branch […]
