The second book in this metafictional British detective series.

The Sentence is Death (Hawthorne, #2) by Anthony Horowitz

December 30, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

Overall thoughts: *I read this really fast, and it was a fun read, what with “Anthony” being so frustrated at being behind Hawthorne in figuring out what was going on, and in his capacity as a real-life writer where we get fun glimpses into the behind the scenes life of someone who makes art and rubs shoulders with famous people but isn’t really all that famous himself. *I am still puzzled by Horowitz’s fictional but supposedly real detective. What is his deal? By that I […]

Anthony Horowitz becomes a character in his own mystery novel.

The Word is Murder (Hawthorne, #1) by Anthony Horowitz

December 21, 2019 by narfna 5 Comments

It’s been almost three months since I finished this and I still don’t know what I want to say about this weird little book. This is a very meta murder mystery, in which Anthony Horowitz becomes a character in his own writing. (It is left up to you to decide how much of his “real life” that we see in the book is like his own real life, but I’m just going to presume background and biographical details are all true, though presumably if he […]

Finally getting around to a series I’ve had on my TBR for ten years. #CBRBingo – Reading the TBR

Goblin Quest (Jig the Goblin, #1) by Jim C. Hines

July 23, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

Somehow I’ve ended up reading all of Jim C. Hines’s series in reverse publication order. Jig the Goblin is the last series of his I have to read, and the first published. It’s definitely not as polished or witty as I found his later books, and perhaps I’m missing something because I don’t play Dungeons & Dragons, but it was a fun time anyway. Having read a shit ton of fantasy in my day, I felt I could still appreciate it. Plus, I get to […]

Pssst, Cannonballers. Read this book, I think you will like it a lot.

“If you want the motivation back, you must feed it. Feed it everything. Books, television, movies, paintings, stage plays, real-life experience. Sometimes feeding simply means working, working through nonmotivation, working even when you hate it. We create art for many reasons—wealth, fame, love, admiration—but I find the one thing that produces the best results is desire. When you want the thing you’re creating, the beauty of it will shine through, even if the details aren’t all in order. Desire is the fuel of creators, and […]

Literally is the story of a girl named Annabelle who finds out that she is a character in a book being written by an author named Lucy Keating (Who is the author of Literally, which makes the book Annabelle’s story). Annabelle is given a perfect love interest named Will, but she constantly finds herself drawn towards her brother’s best friend, Elliot. Eventually, AB and Will visit Lucy Keating and demand that she stop writing about them. They think it will help, but then they start […]

I still don’t know what to do with this.

January 17, 2016 by narfna 2 Comments

It’s been days since I finished this, and I still don’t know what I think about it. I don’t even know if I liked it or if I hated it or if it was a good ending or a bad ending, or if it was even an ending. Like, yes, OBVIOUSLY it was an ending literally because the series is over, but good endings FEEL like endings, you know? Does that answer my question as to whether this is good or not? I have no […]
