“We are all lichens”

Life Entangled by Merlin Sheldrake

December 4, 2021 by Nart Leave a Comment

This is the sort of book that can give you back a childlike wonder of the world. Good enough sell yet? I remember being a kid and thinking it was such a waste to live in this time because we already knew everything. There was nothing left to discover. Of course, then I learned abut space, and then about the deep sea, and it turns out there’s actually a rather shocking amount of stuff we don’t know. I would argue there is an overwhelming amount […]

Entangled but also Incomplete

Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake

Bingo 17: The Wilds I’ll be honest: I was planning to use Entangled Life for the ‘flora’ square except that the author pointed out that fungi and some related things are not actually plants exactly; they are essentially their own thing. That’s actually a major part of the book, just how diverse fungi, lichens, and yeasts are. Anyways, a significant amount of the book is about fungi in their natural habitats (ie- outdoors) and just how little is known, and just how much could be […]

Entangled Life – Merlin Sheldrake (2020)

Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake

April 13, 2021 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

This is a very interesting and fascinating book with a little bit of an identity crisis. As a primer into the world of the interconnected of fungi with animal life, human life, plant life, and ecosystems this popular science text is a really eye-opening text. Sheldrake is effective at being a passionate advocate for fungi awareness, as well as predicted skepticism at some of the claims made here and addressing them as he goes. He presents an overview of the research, the history of research, […]

My mind is blown, and not because I’ve been sampling magic mushrooms

Entangled Life: How Fungi Make our Worlds, Change our Minds, and Shape our Futures by Merlin Sheldrake

March 21, 2021 by KimMiE" 12 Comments

I have read many books on science and natural history, but few have made me stop reading every few pages to look up and declare to whomever is within hearing distance (currently, my husband and cats, because we’re in a pandemic), “This is fascinating.” I don’t care if you’ve never read a book about nature in all your previous existence. Entangled Life will ensorcel you with tales of carnivorous mushrooms, zombie fungi, acid trips, and superhero microorganisms that could end up saving the planet. If […]

We owe fungi a lot, and you owe it to yourself to read this book

Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds, and Shape Our Futures by Merlin Sheldrake

March 6, 2021 by Mobius_Walker 1 Comment

This is a book about fungus. If you’re thinking “Huh, fungi are weird and I like learning new things,” you should pick up this book immediately. If you’re thinking “Ew, no. Mushrooms are gross,” you should pick up this book immediately because fungi (apparently!) are so much more than just mushrooms (which I learned are just the fruiting bodies of some fungi). In Entangled Life, Merlin Sheldrake, which may be the greatest name ever, begins by walking the reader through the basics of what fungi are […]
