“Wormholes tend to travel in packs.”

FINNA by Nino Cipri

July 15, 2021 by Bothari43 5 Comments

Well this was an adorable little slice of a book. A wormhole opens in a giant IKEA-like store, a customer wanders through it, and two disgruntled employees (who have recently broken up and have been trying to avoid each other) are assigned to go fetch her, using a FINNA device to track her down. Ava and Jules hate their soul-sucking retail jobs but love each other, even though their various neuroses have made them incompatible. When the employees are all herded into a break room […]

“I’m not joking, but we still laugh because laughter is the best way to cover pain.”

Broken (in the best possible way) by Jenny Lawson

June 24, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

If you’ve read a Jenny Lawson book before, you’ll know what to expect here. Side-splitting anecdotes, social anxiety, lots of animal stories, bizarre arguments with her husband Victor, talking openly about mental health issues like depression, etc. (She has treatment resistant depression and doesn’t shy away from talking about her lowest moments, including feeling suicidal.) And yet this book feels light and very human. Some notable departures in this one, she spends quite a bit of time reflecting on the differences between her and Victor’s […]

Absolutely delightful book/audiobook about terrible subjects.

Get Well Soon: History's Worst Plagues and the Heroes Who Fought Them by Jennifer Wright

May 15, 2021 by narfna 2 Comments

Perhaps it is an indicator of my improving mental health (it is), but I really enjoyed this book! In a morbid, worrisome, fun kind of way. Get Well Soon is a book about famous plagues and diseases (and lobotomies? for some reason?) and not only was it a fast, interesting read, it was also funny (obviously, humor is subjective, and I’ve seen several reviews saying the humor missed the mark for them, but it hit 100% for me—it helps that the audiobook narrator, Gabra Zackman, […]

Ranging from Excellent to Mediocre

Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo

Reasons to Stay Alive by Matt Haig

Pride by Ibi Zoboi

A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson

April 13, 2021 by Ellesfena 2 Comments

None of these books fit into my reviewing theme this year (revisiting series I’d never finished), but I wanted to review Clap When You Land anyway because it is excellent, and I decided to throw the other three in as a bonus. Clap When You Land: 5 stars. Plot: Camino lives in the Dominican Republic with her Tia and sees her father every summer, when he comes back from New York City to visit. When his plan tragically crashes and everyone aboard dies, she discovers […]

a very special episode in a very farcical town

Anxious People by Fredrik Backman

March 15, 2021 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

*”Yakkety Sax” blares through your speakers* A robbery- wait, but not quite. A bank robber, but not who you expect. An accidental hostage situation. Aggressively unhelpful witnesses. A nervous eater who devours a whole lime, pith and all. Bumbling cops. Feisty old ladies. Sounds fun, yes? It is fun! There is a solid farce at the core of this story. Misunderstandings, misdirection, and missed connections fly in and out of quickly slamming doors. A manically wound player piano would not be out of place in […]

DC Super Hero Girls V05: Out of the Bottle Graphic Novel. by Shea Fontana

February 23, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was looking for something fun, light, and easy to read. And though I noticed awhile back that the last two times I took out books from the library I ended up in the ER, I decided to take a chance. I picked out five titles (with a sixth in case one was not available) and ended up with four. Good average and considering the one I am reading; I probably will not be getting through them all too soon. Therefore, I picked up first  […]
