Levi…*heart eyes*

Fangirl, the Manga. Vol 2 by Rainbow Rowell, Sam Maggs and Gabi Nam

July 30, 2022 by Malin Leave a Comment

4.5 stars CBR14 Bingo: Bodies (Cath and Levi become a lot more aware of each other’s bodies in this volume – not like THAT. Get your mind out of the gutter!) Cath has started getting more comfortable at college and with her classes, but she still finds it difficult to reconcile the fact that her twin, Wren, is having such a great time without her. Wren is embracing the party lifestyle and seems to spend a lot of evenings out drinking with her roommate. Meanwhile, […]

We Only Get This One Body

Fat, Crazy, and Tired: Tales from the Trenches of Transformation by Van Lathan, Jr.

July 21, 2022 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

I know Van Lathan from his Ringer podcasts, Higher Learning and Ringer-Verse. When I saw that he published a book earlier this year about his relationship with his body I thought, yes – let’s read that. What I got was a cultural critique of the unspoken things that keep us from maintaining good health in America right now. So much of the way in which the systems around us fail us forms the bedrock of this book, but its Lathan’s way of exploring the larger […]

Comics Anthologies Can Be A Gamble

Through the Labyrinths of the Mind by Bevan Thomas and Hannah Myers (editors)

Life Finds a Way by Alina Pete and Dan Anctil (editors)

June 22, 2022 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

A comics anthology is always a gamble and I unfortunately found these to be a let down. I don’t want to come off as mean about these anthologies, since they’re done by a charity organization that fosters a nice community of comics creators in British Columbia, but I think the uneven quality is a side effect of their mission. I don’t regret getting these because I will never regret reading comics, even if they’re kind of meh, but I maybe regret the shipping cost from […]

Time Warp

Nowhere Girl by Magali Le Huche

June 10, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

In the first few pages of Nowhere Girl, I felt like I had time traveled between several decades. First, the 1960s due to the reference of the Beatles and the feeling of the art and tone of the story. Then, the 1970s via the look of the city and again, the tone of the story and the Beatles. And then via the clothes we finally landed in the 1980s and 1990s. But then you have references to some pop culture when the main character and […]

“Breaking up with your phone means giving yourself the space, freedom, and tools necessary to create a new, long-term relationship with it, one that keeps what you love about your phone and gets rid of what you don’t.”

How to Break Up with Your Phone: The 30-Day Plan to Take Back Your Life by Catherine Price

April 13, 2022 by cheerbrarian 7 Comments

In one word: Transformative I was a late adopter of the smartphone, someone who said that they didn’t need or want “all of that” on their phone. In 2010 I started a new job and at the end of my first meeting at my new gig, everyone pulled out their phones to plan the next meeting and I realized I was the only person who was going to have to go back to my office to consult a calendar. I saw then that I “needed” […]
