Before I get too far into this review, I just want to state, for the record, Felicia Day has said that she does not really like being dubbed ‘The Queen of the Internet’ or ‘The Queen of the Geeks’ or whatever crown we the people want to bestow upon her, but the fact that she comes unwillingly to power only makes her more worthy, honestly. I do feel a bit bad about potentially making her feel more anxious over this responsibility we’ve all thrust on her, […]
“It’s hard being weird. No—it’s hard living in a culture that makes it hard.”
On the surface, I am not the target audience for Felicia Day’s memoir You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost). I am a) not a gamer, not even a little, b) have never watched anything on her Geek & Sundry YouTube channel, or really very much on YouTube at all, c) have never watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer, d) I have only ever watched the first half of the first season of Supernatural, e) while aware of the Vaginal Fantasy book club on Goodreads I […]
Lost
This was a pick-up at my favorite independent bookstore last weekend. I found it engrossing in the beginning, although I struggled to finish it. Not because it was bad, or even too heavy. I think I was just easily distracted. Wave is Dr. Sonali Deraniyagala’s story about her life after the 2004 tsunami that wracked Southeast Asia. She was visiting a resort town in her native Sri Lanka with her parents, husband, and two sons. She was the only one to survive the tsunami. Each […]
There’s More than What You See on A & E
CANNONBALL! I am actually in the middle of two other books, both of which would have been a fine way to reach the milestone of my third cannonball read. But I picked this up at the library before a camping trip this weekend and didn’t want to put it down. So it seems to be a fitting choice for review #52. Author Kimberly Rae Miller was raised by two loving parents, one of whom is a hoarder, and the other who has, at times, been […]
Cannonball: a Family Affair
I heard about Mary Anna King’s Bastards through an article on Uproxx a few months ago and clearly so did a few other people because after her book came out in late June there was a wait list at the local library. Bastards is not a completely accurate title- Mary and her siblings were born to parents who were married (although at some points separated) but financial circumstances made keeping them all together impossible. Before Mary was two her grandfather & his wife came to […]
Why Don’t We Wear More Kilts?
A few months ago, I saw that Craig Ferguson was performing at my local fancy music hall and, on a whim, got a couple of tickets to go check it out. I’m not really a late night person, mostly because I tend to be in bed by 10PM and have little motivation to watch late night shows the day after they air. But, if given the choice, Ferguson would have been my go-to while he was on. I found his sense of humor engaging, his […]
