A new year, a new Cannonball, and I’m sticking with what works for me. I kicked off CBR7 with amemoir, so I figure why not go the same route? This was also a gift from my awesome book exchange gifter, who correctly noted I love memoirs of strong, amazing women who do incredible things. A+ job on this one, Teresa. Now, I must admit that I knew nothing about Carrie’s life before picking up this book. I’ve never listened to Sleater-Kinney, and I watched Portlanida once, but […]
Terry loves writing autobiographies!
The title to this book misled me a bit. It sounds like a self-help/relationships/gender studies book, but Manhood is about ninety-five percent Terry Crews memoir, and only about five percent advice about being a good guy. This frustrated me a bit; it felt like a little bit of a bait and switch from the publisher or Crews. Celebrity autobiographies seem more prevalent than I can remember, and they vary widely in quality and readability. While this one was not what I expected, it ultimately did […]
“We Tell Ourselves Stories in Order to Live”-Joan Didion
When I was in college, I remember taking an international politics class. It was an Intro class, populated by a lot of students who heard it was a skate class. We ended up talking about North Korea one day, and one waste of valuable mass stood up to proclaim that if he were a North Korean, hewouldn’t be taking any of “ this Kim Jong Whatever’s shit.” When our professor (I hope trying to amp up our fremdschämen, and as a slight tangent, seriously God […]
Unsinkable doesn’t quite stay afloat
Many Canadians like myself remember Silken Laumann’s amazing perseverance after a severe leg injury, to win a bronze medal only 10 weeks later at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. Even without the gold, she was one of the hero stories of the game, and certainly an important one for Canada. One day, I happened across an interview to hear her talking about her memoir, Unsinkable. She sounded quite passionate and open about her life, so I looked forward to reading it. After a long wait […]
Do yourself a favor and read this book
This book, this book, this book. How do you even begin to talk about something so meaningful and perfect? I gave up religion years ago, but Tiny Beautiful Things is my replacement bible. This book is for everyone. It’s the kind of book you just buy extra copies of in advance so you can give it away when needed and not have to risk lending out your own copy. I’ve been flirting with Strayed’s memoir, Wild, for a while now, but I’m kind of glad […]
I was prowling through my library, on the search for a romance novel only available in print, when I spied You’re Never Weird on the Internet (almost) (2015) by Felicia Day, sitting out on a display table. I know Felicia Day from Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, which I loved, but that’s about it. Curious, I cracked open the book to get a feel for it and read the first paragraph of the introduction: “I recently experienced the perfect summary of my career at a Build-A-Bear store […]
