faintingviolet gave me this book right before Carrie Fisher died, and I’m only now not too sad to read it.

February 16, 2018 by narfna 4 Comments

I’ve really been trying to make an effort in 2018 to read books I already own. Currently the amount of books I own but haven’t read, including in audio and e-book, numbers around 221. faintingviolet gave me this book in the CBR book exchange in December 2016, two weeks before Carrie Fisher died. Even though I was beyond excited to finally have it in my possession, since it had been on my TBR for years and I’d never gotten around to it, I just couldn’t make myself read […]

Not Bad as a Background Soundtrack to Age of Empires II

February 12, 2018 by slowseptember Leave a Comment

I have a three-month-old son, and one of the ways we often spend our afternoons is with him napping and me playing on the computer. I can knock out a round of Age of Empires II in an hour, and I often put on an audiobook (usually of a book  I’ve read before, so I don’t have to pay much attention) and listen throughout my game  and for the rest of the afternoon when the little buddy wakes up.

Elvis, sex, Bruce Willis and marriage

February 11, 2018 by AkBeagle 2 Comments

I chose this book because it was on the Karina Longworth’s, (You Must Remember This podcast) list of great Hollywood memoirs and the kindle edition was only $.99. I vaguely remembered the actress from her tv shows, Moonlighting and Cybill but it was actually the negative reviews on Amazon that convinced me to read the book. Cybill Sheppard was a southern beauty queen turned model turned actress. She was also proudly promiscuous and a believer in nontraditional relationships. The book is a loosely chronological set […]

A book for everyone

February 3, 2018 by yesknopemaybe 4 Comments

(Sidenote: In posting this review, I’m noticing that the Kindle version is just $2.99!) 4.5 stars. As a person in the 21st century who exists both in the real world and the internet world, I had a passing knowledge of who Lindy West was. I had mostly only encountered her work that went viral however, so I didn’t go into this book as a hardcore fangirl, just as an interested bystander. I think after reading this, I can probably be classified as a hardcore fangirl. […]

“He’s Mine, He’s Everyone’s”

January 21, 2018 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

Last year there were several glowing reviews of Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime. Based on positive word of mouth I had already picked up the audio version which Noah narrates himself. I was intrigued by Noah – we’re the same age (well, I’m almost exactly a year older) but our lives couldn’t be more different, and I love a good memoir. For the many reasons life throws your way I did not manage to listen to Born a Crime in 2017. However, fast forward to […]

“It’s All in the Past, so Who Gives a Sh!t?”

January 3, 2018 by Petre18 Leave a Comment

At first glance, the quote I referenced in the title seems counterintuitive. I quite loved Carrie Fisher’s anecdote/diary/book about her time on the first Star Wars set, but the quote seems to brush the past aside. Who cares about how Carrie Fisher didn’t really want to be in show business? Who cares that she was not only Princess Leia, but also a young adult still trying to find her footing in the world? Who cares that Carrie Fisher was one of the few women on the […]
