What a wild and crazy guy

Born Standing Up by Steve Martin

February 7, 2019 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

I love Steve Martin.  The first time my wife visited my house when we were dating, we watched The Jerk.  He is a damn national treasure.  I was interested in the reading this book for some time now, six years according to Goodreads, and it was not quite what I was expecting and yet I loved it all the same. This book seemed almost like Martin wrote it reluctantly and somehow I enjoyed that.  I suppose I expected Born Standing Up to be a typical […]

Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose…

Today is the Last Day of the Rest of Your Life by by Ulli Lust, translated by Kim Thompson

February 3, 2019 by pluiedenovembre Leave a Comment

TG: drug use, sexual assault, violence against women, mafia I’m not really sure I know how to review this book, but I am going to try anyway. Today is the Last Day of the Rest of Your Life is a graphic novel memoir that narrates a specific period in the life of its author. In 1984, shortly before her 17th birthday, Ulli Lust, a rebellious punk girl from Vienna, took off on a hitchhiking trip across Italy with her friend Edi with nothing but a […]

“It’s strange how you give the people you love so much power over you”

Educated by Tara Westover

February 1, 2019 by Carriejay Leave a Comment

Tara Westover grew up in the mountains of Idaho, raised by religious parents who feared government interference and prepared for the End of Days. She was ‘home schooled’ – though her education was minimal – and spent most of her days helping her father with his scrap business. An activity that often left her and her brothers injured. As she got older her father became more radical in his beliefs and her older brother was violent towards her. Tara found her escape in education and […]

Becoming is Inspirational

Becoming by Michelle Obama

January 30, 2019 by Classic 2 Comments

I apologize in advance if this seems a little incoherent. What a great memoir! Michelle Obama hits everything that I love in memoirs. She goes into her childhood, her family, how her parents and family shaped her. And then you get to read about how certain incidents throughout her life defined her. I laughed, cried, grieved, and got angry reading about all of the highs and lows in her life. And I ended up smiling when we get to the epilogue and know that she […]

Gene Machine: The Race to Decipher the Secrets of the Ribosome by Venki Ramakrishnan

January 26, 2019 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

“So I don’t subscribe to the heroic narrative of science. Rather, some of us are fortunate enough to be the agents of important discoveries that would have been made anyway, sometimes not even that much later. “   I think this quote in particular sums up why I loved this book and its author so much. I am aware from both media portrayals of science and from discussing my work with friends and family that the public perception of the scientific process is […]
