“What is grief, if not love persevering?”

The Art of Reassembly: A Memoir of Early Mother Loss and Aftergrief by Peg Conway

November 23, 2021 by ElCicco 2 Comments

In November 1970, when cancer treatments were rudimentary and grief counseling nonexistent, my cousin Peg Conway’s mother died at the age of 37. My aunt Mary Lee was my father’s twin, and she had had breast cancer that metasticized into brain cancer and took her life, leaving behind a husband and four children. In the decades since that tragic event, Peg has struggled to deal with her unacknowledged grief, and this memoir chronicles her journey from hurting child to adult looking for healing. It is […]

The eyes of a doe and the balls of a samurai.

The Princess Diarist by Carrie Fisher

October 27, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

I see why this book is so much lower rated than her other two memoirs. It’s kind of scattered, and half of it is devoted to her affair with Harrison Ford, which isn’t told in a juicy manner but in a self-reflecting one, and the diaries that detailed her experience of that affair. I get why she wanted to tell this story herself; she wanted to control the narrative. It’s just . . . not super fun to read about. My favorite parts of this […]

“Sylvia did reach her dream of becoming a ballerina. And it all started with one determined girl with one library book from one bookmobile.”

Ready to Fly: How Sylvia Townsend Became The Bookmobile Ballerina by Lea Lyon & A. LaFaye, Illustrations by Jessica Gibson

October 27, 2021 by NTE Leave a Comment

We’re gonna start off today’s review by (potentially? I don’t think I’ve talked about this here before) learning a new thing about NTE: I used to be a dancer. Before my body decided that anything that required even standing was completely out of the question (so from age 3-15, basically), being a dancer was a major part of my identity. I danced five days a week – tap, ballet, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, & pointe. Pointe was – by far – my worst class (I had […]

A funny book about racism — get the audio if you can!

You'll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey: Crazy Stories About Racism by Amber Ruffin & Lacey Lamar

October 25, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

A good time, despite the subject matter. Amber and Lacey make hearing stories about racism simultaneously entertaining and infuriating. Laughing while angry! The best example of what this book does is probably the story that they open it with, for good reason. It involves Lacey being at a store and paying with a check (back when people did that). The cashier was a white teenager. Lacey had checks with famous and historically notable Black people on them. When she pulled out her checkbook the check […]

Un-cook Yourself: A Ratbag's Rules for Life by Nat's What I Reckon

October 17, 2021 by LittlePlat 6 Comments

I think I’ve made it clear before that I am not someone who is normally drawn to self-help books. I have also mentioned that Audible kind of takes issue with this rather strongly, and insists on throwing suggestions my way. But through either sheer persistence or will, it turns out that one did stick Probably because it is kind of—in part—a piss-take of self-help books anyhow. The other half is a genuine call for you to keep your chin up Champion!—because it is completely normal […]

What It Means to Survive

The Night the Lights Went Out by Drew Magary

October 16, 2021 by Jake 3 Comments

Read as part of CBR13Bingo: Representation. Drew Magary writes about suffering a traumatic brain injury and adjusting to the ill effects of it that left him non-able bodied.  There are very few books I’d recommend to people across my family/friends spectrum. This is one. Perhaps it is one of one. Drew Magary is one of my favorite writers but it sure as hell didn’t start out that way. At Kissing Suzy Kolber, I found him to be a loud-mouthed bully, the kind of guy who thinks […]
