The Kind of Fame That’ll Warp My Brain

Still Just a Geek: An Annotated Memoir by Wil Wheaton

August 28, 2022 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo: Star (Both because Wheaton is a celebrity, and also because of Star Trek) It feels like there’s been a lot of talk lately about child stars, what with Jennette McCurdy’s book coming out and the recent allegations against Fred Savage. Between all that, reading Still Just a Geek, and reading snippets from House of Hilton about Kim Richards, I’m starting to think maybe we should just ban Hollywood from using child actors? In the early 2000s, Will Wheaton published a book of essays (Just a Geek) […]

Deaf Utopia book cover: Nyle DiMarco smiling

Deaf Utopia by Nyle DiMarco

August 28, 2022 by Sofi Keren Leave a Comment

I’ll admit it. I watched almost every single season of America’s Next Top Model. Mostly I loved seeing how the photos turned out in the end, tuning out the manipulated drama that took up half of each episode until the photo shoots began. Nyle DiMarco, the show’s first Deaf contestant, won season 22 (yeah, there were that many seasons and more). Much has been written about the problematic aspects of the show, and one chapter of his does touch on an episode where the producers […]

Gendered correctly by President Jimmy Carter.

Sorted: Growing Up, Coming Out, and Finding My Place (A Transgender Memoir) by Jackson Bird

July 26, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

I really enjoyed this transgender memoir, and I really enjoy Jackson Bird, as it turns out! Before we get to the millionaire-author-sized elephant in the room, this is a pretty basic memoir about Jackson’s life from birth to his late twenties, with a specific focus on his struggles with gender and sexuality before finally coming out as a trans man at age 25. This was an extremely solid book, told with clear uncomplicated prose, and an impressive sense of self-reflection. As a cis person, I […]

“This – not any particular piece of Vietnamese culture – is my inheritance: the inexplicable need and extraordinary ability to run when the shit hits the fan. My refugee reflex.”

The Best We Could Do by Thi Bui

July 23, 2022 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

On 2022’s Read Harder Challenge Task 6 is to read a non-fiction YA comic. Each year when the Read Harder tasks are unveiled, I go through my over 600 book deep to read list on Goodreads looking for books to fulfill each task. I knew this one would be difficult, there just isn’t much in the way of non-fiction graphic works on my TBR, which is an area I could do to grow in (thus, doing this reading challenge each year since 2015). I was […]

We Only Get This One Body

Fat, Crazy, and Tired: Tales from the Trenches of Transformation by Van Lathan, Jr.

July 21, 2022 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

I know Van Lathan from his Ringer podcasts, Higher Learning and Ringer-Verse. When I saw that he published a book earlier this year about his relationship with his body I thought, yes – let’s read that. What I got was a cultural critique of the unspoken things that keep us from maintaining good health in America right now. So much of the way in which the systems around us fail us forms the bedrock of this book, but its Lathan’s way of exploring the larger […]

Less about Mozart’s starling than the author’s starling, but still interesting

Mozart's Starling by Lyanda Lynn Haupt

July 17, 2022 by KimMiE" 2 Comments

CBR BINGO 14: Bird, because there is a bird on the cover and it tells the story of a bird (two, in fact!) Although the bird didn’t appear in the movie Amadeus, Mozart owned a starling during three of the most productive years of his life, the time period when he wrote The Marriage of Figaro, eight piano concertos, and three symphonies. To be able to tell the story of Mozart’s Starling effectively, author Lyanda Lynn Haupt adopted a starling of her own. This book is a […]
