It’s not easy being green

February 22, 2014 by anotterchaos Leave a Comment

Wow, is that post title a cop out. Anyhow, this is a memoir from an Elphaba.  An Elphaba stand-by, actually. It’s a fun look, for any musical theater geek, behind the big green curtain.  What goes on in there?  What do stand-bys do?  How crazy are those costumes?  Did the flying machinery ever break down? (Not answered, BTW). It’s also a memoir of a young woman plagued with insecurities and fears of failure, both in her professional & personal lives. It began as a blog, […]

Movie is coming out? Better read it quick!

February 17, 2014 by thewheelbarrow 5 Comments

I read (listened) this book because I wanted to watch the movie. I do not like watching movies before reading books on which they are based. I am active duty military but this is not the type of book I normally read. I like to leave work at work so reading military novels, both fiction and non-fiction, is something I avoid. I thoroughly expected to not really like Lone Survivor.  That said, I loved this book. Lone Survivor was written by Marcus Luttrell but I […]

February 11, 2014 by AskImagine Leave a Comment

Janet Mock has recently been publicizing her memoir, Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love & So Much More, on multiple talk shows, some of which have interviewed her in ways that seem insensitive.

“To the dead, one owes nothing but the truth”

February 8, 2014 by MsWas Leave a Comment

Since I’ve been moderating the Cannonball Read these three last years, I don’t usually have the time or inclination to write a review of anything I read, but after finishing Son of a Gun by Justin St. Germain, I’m compelled to write about this book and tell you all to READ IT. On first glance, this slim volume of a memoir doesn’t seem very substantial. I’m really not sure why I picked it up off the new book shelf at the library, though the solemn-face little boy […]

A BFF finds TLA

February 8, 2014 by Another Kate Leave a Comment

Patience Bloom says:  “Around five a.m. I put on my clothes—noticing my boots are still on—and leave his apartment. The victorious rush of leaving without being asked fuels me. I am such a strong, independent woman who doesn’t need to linger. I can’t waste a second since I have an entire day in which to spread the news of my whorishness. I want to scream across the Île Saint-Louis, I just had my first one-night stand! But I don’t since it’s five in the morning […]
