“She’s not a Pisces!” says my fiancee

The Pisces by Melissa Broder

July 24, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith 2 Comments

Where to begin? I guess I’ll simply come out and say it: this is, without any doubt in my mind, one of the worst books I have ever read. We’re talking to the point that even one star is too gracious, which is why I have decided to leave this review as “unrated.” In other words, I give this book literally zero stars and wish I could simply ctrl+z the memory of it from my brain, because I spent all last night after finishing it finding […]

Milk Fed – Melissa Broder (2021)

Milk Fed by Melissa Broder

March 9, 2021 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

I really do like Melissa Broder’s writing, and this is the fourth book of hers I’ve read, and after loving The Pisces, I found this one disappointing. It’s hard to separate all my thoughts while reading the book from additional thoughts and ideas from my conversations with my wife, who also has read both novels, and from a few reviews and interviews with the book. I called this book “one of the most spooked books I’ve read” and I meant by this that it feels […]

The Cover Screamed “ME!” But the Read Was Actually Very Frustrating and Not Me At All…

The Pisces by Melissa Broder

October 9, 2020 by Lisa Bee 2 Comments

A cover showing a woman lovingly embracing a fish AND a title which is my star sign (a sign that I personally extremely exemplify in all manners of my behavior)? Sign me up! Or so I thought. Turns out, despite wanting to know where this would go and thereby finishing it quite quickly, I wasn’t feeling it for a few reasons. And yes, I will get into all of them because I have realized that when I don’t like things I always feel like I […]

Not for me

November 19, 2018 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

So apparently this book has depths and metaphors that I’m just not getting. Admittedly, I didn’t read to closely because, like, 40% of this was just awkward, graphic sex scenes and that is super not my bag. There’s also another very valid reason I didn’t like this book but I’ll do my best to push it below the fold. Okay, quickie plot. Our protagonist, whose name I’ve already forgotten, is a PhD student in Phoenix who has been stalled for years on her thesis on Sapho […]

The fantasy is a lie

May 17, 2018 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

I have to wonder how pissed Melissa Broder was when The Shape of Water came out. Not so much that it exists, but that it became such a thing. Because her book was almost definitely all done and in the can. Anyway, this is an otherwise kind of formulaic “Fear of Flying” kind of breakup novel about a grad student who has an unfinished dissertation about Sappho’s poetry trying to figure out how to spend her final summer before her funding is pulled. She moves […]
