Can Monsters Still Stalk in the Light?? Uh, YES.

January 14, 2016 by Melina Leave a Comment

I did it! Thanks to a double ear infection, a sinus infection  AND strep I was able to read this six book series in seven days.  It was a bumpy ride.  All the books were good, but they were all full of suffering, pain, death, murder, suicide, (a little bit of love) and not a whole lot of hope.  But I made it through them all and I’m glad that I did because this was a pretty solid series.  Book seven, Light, has a couple […]

Darkness Falls

January 14, 2016 by Melina Leave a Comment

The fifth book in the Gone series by Michael Grant is Fear. Fear picks up about four months after the previous book so now the kids have been stuck in the FAYZ (a giant opaque bubble) for a year, surviving the best that they can with limited resources, all kinds of weird mutated animals, oh and an evil entity that needs a body in the hopes that it can be “born” and wreck havoc on the world outside of the FAYZ.  So yeah, the kids […]

Never Read Books About Plagues When You’re Sick

January 11, 2016 by Melina Leave a Comment

Don’t expect me to keep up this reading pace, I’m going to drop back soon, for sure. I decided not to grade anything and just read in bed, on the couch or wherever my kids would let me be sick and “semi-participate” in life while coughing, sneezing, and snorting.  So this is book four in the Gone series and while I’m enjoying reading these books, I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone if you’re having a bad go of things lately–you might smile for a second […]

Sh*t Just Got Real

January 9, 2016 by Melina Leave a Comment

Where I was feeling that perhaps after book two of this series I was going to let it go, I couldn’t without finding out what happens to the kids trapped in the FAYZ (Fallout Alley Youth Zone). I’m glad that I didn’t stop reading the series. This book surpassed book two by a mile…but man, did it get dark. I literally cannot talk about nearly any aspect of the plot without spoiling things from books one and two…I’ve tried three times to write this review, […]

The Art and Poetry of War

January 8, 2016 by Melina 8 Comments

I teach British Literature to 17 and 18 year olds of various levels and degrees of interest (in different classes).  Something that I’ve noticed over the years is that just about all my students feel something when we read World War I poetry. I don’t know if it’s because it’s visceral,  perhaps they appreciate the simple plain language, or maybe they can relate to the poems where the young authors express regret and naivete about their involvement in the war.  Because come on, I remember […]

When I’m Missing My Dad, I Read This

January 5, 2016 by Melina 6 Comments

Everything about my dad was big.  Even without an arm, leg and three fingers (Vietnam injuries), he rode a motorcycle (modified of course), was part of a biker gang, had curse words tattooed on his arm(! that went over well in private school, believe me!!!) and everyone who has ever met him has had a story about him.  He was an imposing man, with a giant beard and a very loud voice (also probably due to becoming a bit hard of hearing in Vietnam).  He […]
