My baby and I cleaned off his bookshelf this weekend. My baby is nearly 8, and his interest in the picture books that I spent hours upon hours reading to him and his big sister has waned in favor of a growing number of graphic novels and chapter books. He needed more room on his shelf. My heart broke a little (read: a lot) when he handed me You Are My I Love You and said that it was time to pack it away. It’s […]
Expect. Don’t Accept.
This is my book club read for the month. It was an inspiring, if not entirely engrossing read. The memoir covers Daugherty’s experiences as a father to Jillian, his second child, who has Down syndrome. The diagnosis is a surprise to Daugherty and his wife Kerry, but they become loving, attentive, and tireless advocates for their loving, attentive, and tireless daughter. Early on in the book, Daugherty reveals the mantras that he and his wife developed in the hospital that carry them through in their parenting […]
The Grinch’s small heart grew three sizes that day
You Cannonballers know what you’re talking about! I am the billionth person to read and enjoy Act Like It, but I’m a special snowflake. I don’t like romances. But I liked this one! I really liked it, you guys! First, a housekeeping note: I checked Lucy Parker’s Twitter feed and see that Act Like It is set to be released as a paperback in July. This is good news for the non-Kindled among us! For the Kindled, this is currently $3.99, and well worth it. […]
I mean, but really he’s just saying what we’re all thinking, right?
I had to start this review by searching for the differences between sociopaths and psychopaths. Never say that I don’t strive for accuracy! Joe Goldberg is a psychopath. We met him in Kepnes’ GLORIOUS debut novel, You, which I easily 5-starred in 2014. If you haven’t already read it, I highly recommend that you do so. At the time I described it as “Lolita for the Twitterverse”, and the story of Joe Goldberg’s obsession with Guinevere Beck really set the unlikeable, unreliable narrator trend on […]
Tumult in ancient Rome, you don’t say!
A few years ago I read and loved Kate Quinn’s Mistress of Rome, but it had taken me some time to pick up this prequel. I really enjoyed the central love story in Mistress, so the larger and more scattered cast left me feeling less invested in Daughters. Daughters of Rome takes place during the Year of Four Emperors, around 69 AD. Our main characters are the “four Cornelias”; four young women from a very prominent patrician family. Cornelia Prima is well- and happily married […]
You’ve got to hide your love away
I’ve not seen Carol, the Cate Blanchett/Rooney Mara film adapatation of this novel, but I can see how beautifully this work would translate to film, especially in the hands of Blanchett. She is perfect for the role of Carol, a rather cool and collected wealthy suburbanite. Carol becomes the singular romantic focus of Therese, a very young aspiring NYC set designer, after a brief meeting in the toy department of the store where Therese works. The relationship between Therese and Carol develops slowly, until Therese […]
