Pizza dog is the best.

April 30, 2015 by narfna Leave a Comment

When you think “superhero comic,” nothing about what Matt Fraction is doing with Hawkeye will come to mind. The style alone with its limited color palette and cartoonish art (but in a wonderful, highly stylized way) is enough to set it apart. Each issue (for the most part) stands alone. Also for the most part, the concerns of this comic are not thwarting global domination or defeating bad guys with world-destroying powers or stopping galactic assholes from destroying the Earth. Nope, our two Hawkeyes (Clint […]

Hawkeye, but funny!

April 30, 2015 by narfna 4 Comments

Who is Hawkeye outside of the Avengers? What does Clint Barton do when he’s not being Hawkeye? Apparently start lots of fights, shell out tons of cash, hang out with young Avenger Kate Bishop, and also be a total smartass. Each issue is a sort of stand-alone thriller with Clint and Kate getting in and out of all kinds of trouble. Some of the conflicts are as small as saving an apartment building or a dog, and as large as a billion dollar sting operation […]

Sex, comedy, and bank-robbery, with a gooey emotional center.

April 4, 2015 by narfna 8 Comments

This book was So. Much. Fun. Obvious warning here, though. If the title and cover didn’t clue you in, this book has sex in it. The sex is awkward and funny and causes time to stop, but still. It’s sex. Suzie has a very special power. Her orgasms are magical. THEY CAN STOP TIME. And while this is undoubtedly a cool superpower, it also makes her pretty lonely, once she discovers she is the only one this happens to. Until she discovers she isn’t the […]

Ody-C #3 by Matt Fraction and Christian Ward (Image 2015)

Odyssia vs. the Cyclops

March 26, 2015 by KM Bezner Leave a Comment

After a century of war, Odyssia and her warriors have left Troiia in ruins. Despite their victory they have many challenges yet to face, not the least of which is the ire of Zeus and Poseidon. Having dealt with treachery on her own ship and resisted the temptation offered by the Lotus-Eaters, Odyssia is once again on the path home. Ody-C #3 begins with a flashback to the birth of the goddess Apollo. Or is it Dionysus? Continue reading on Women Write About Comics.

If You Could Stop Time, Wouldn’t You Rob a Bank, Too?

March 8, 2015 by AmySaysREAD 1 Comment

In case you’re not aware, Image Comics has a bunch of amazing ish happening over there right now. Of my four reviews so far (including this one), they’ve all been graphic novels, and only one hasn’t been from Image. Those people know what they’re doing; the stories are all great and the art is phenomenal in basically every Image book you pick up. Over in my blog, I’ve reviewed the first volume of Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky’s Sex Criminals, which is about a girl […]

And Then I Noticed Myself Saying, “Okay. This Looks Bad.” at my Own Shenanigans

November 21, 2014 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

I adore Matt Fraction’s depictions of Hawkeye. He comes across as so dry and hilarious, while still having a huge heart and caring for those around him. This volume of the Hawkeye series, however, focuses on his young, female Hawkeye friend, Kate Bishop, who is sometimes just as ridiculous as Clint Barton when she gets herself into trouble. The adventure also takes place across the country from the usual New York action, as Kate travels to L.A. for a break from all of Clint’s drama… […]
