To forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time.

May 22, 2017 by tillie 4 Comments

I will not review this as a book. This is not a book. It may be published as a book. It has a title, an author. A cover with neat little blurbs on the back from Oprah Winfrey, from the New York Times. WINNER OF THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE written on the front. All of it seems garish compared to what is inside. This is a witness. “To forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time.” Wiesel describes his life before […]

All ends well for the white man.

May 1, 2017 by tillie 7 Comments

“Like all great novels, “Freedom” does not just tell an engrossing story. It illuminates, through the steady radiance of its author’s profound moral intelligence, the world we thought we knew.” From NYtimes That quote makes me want to vomit. What is it about Jonathan Franzen that brings out the white men? The “let me explain how awesomely brilliant and true and beautiful this book is”-men? This book is shite. And I’ve been reading a lot of reviews to figure out why people love it. The […]

If you’re obsessed with firefly you’ll love this book [gif-edition]

April 29, 2017 by tillie 1 Comment

I read this twice. The minute I finished it, I turned right back to the front and I read it all again. Shepherd Book is one of the quieter characters in Firefly. Mostly, he stays out of battles and on the edges of the scenes. It’s easy to forget those people sometimes, the ones who support the big damn heroes. But the Shepherd held the ship together. His mere steadfastness was what everybody on that ship needed. And the fact that he was a little […]

The adventures of Daddy and his Little Puss

April 12, 2017 by tillie 2 Comments

I love the concept of Joyce Carol Oates. I mean first of all the name! What a splendid name, intricate, commanding with a rhythm like a poem. Joyce Carol Oates cannot be anything other than a writer. And she churns out novels like she’s a novel factory turning sausages into full-blown novels over and over, doesn’t matter what genre, Joyce makes the sausage! But I didn’t like little bird of heaven. In fact it is my first DNF – something I did not anticipate after […]

Bowman’s in Space (Alternate title: So many pizza gifs, so little time)

March 29, 2017 by tillie 1 Comment

Perhaps it is a credit to my stupidity, perhaps a flaw in the genre that I was willing to read 145 pages of foreign world and odd references before I noticed that 3001 is actually the 4th book in the series (maybe the word “final” could have been a clue there, hmm? No?). Perhaps it is Arthur C. Clarkes brilliance that it didn’t matter at all. This book is a delight. “Do you believe in ghosts, Dim?” “Certainly not: but like every sensible man, I’m […]

And you’re stuck to this corner like a streetlight…

Esperanza Cordero lives on Mango street in a house that is not her house. The real house is out there waiting for her and it has beautiful windows and white polished bannisters. But for now Esperanza lives in this house, on Mango Street. I’m not sure what to say about this book. It does not lend itself to direct proclamations. Oh this is a tale of coming of age! Oh this is how [insert riveting plotpoint where the main character battles dragons]! Rather the main […]
