For the Runaways

January 24, 2018 by tillie 9 Comments

The only thing I knew going into this book was that if you like firefly and wish there’d been more episodes of them just hanging around then this is the book for you. And holy fuck is that an accurate description. But like in the best sense, you guys. Rosemary Harper is on a deepod (what’s a deepod? Doesn’t matter) into space where Captain Ashby awaits here aboard the Wayfarer. He needs a new clerk and she needs to get away. Along for the ride […]

It’s gross you guys.

Lolita is a narrative that permeates pop culture, in advertisements, references and romanticizing of things that are not okay. This narrative probably originates from the 1997 film adaptation starring Jeremy Irons:   When I was a teenager this novel was a way to live out my own sexuality and confused feelings about adults around me. These adults were mostly male teachers making Humbert Humbert the perfect stand-in. However engaging with this story as an adult is a bit different. It’s gross you guys. Lolita is […]

Seeing comes before words.

January 15, 2018 by tillie 2 Comments

I picked up this book for a multitude of reasons. Mainly because the cover was brilliant, the physical size of the book is perfect for twisting in your hands and it’s beautiful enough that I wanted to be seen with it. The first page is remarkable. It starts with one sentence “Seeing comes before words. The child looks and recognizes before it speaks.” And then whitespace. I’m such a sucker for whitespace. This book should have had more whitespace. It’s set in a bold Univers […]

In which I call Arthur C. Clarke’s sci-fi classic ‘hella baller’

January 9, 2018 by tillie 1 Comment

Are you feeling hopeless at the prospect of 2018? Boy do I have the book for you. In childhood’s end the world is ruled by “overlords,” who clean up the world and end wars and bring peace to mankind – ain’t it swell? There can’t possibly be a caveat – – oh wait there is? [redacted for spoilers] Nevermind then. Right, so read this book, because at least we humans, as a species, are still kinda autonomous? “Evil men could be destroyed, but nothing could […]

Mama’s real upset now.

December 30, 2017 by tillie Leave a Comment

In the first country I lived in we had these small packets of liquorice called GaJol. They were my favourite, because I like liquorice, but also because on the back of each packet was a small joke, a word play or a fancy quote. Sometimes I would tear one off and keep them, but most of the time I just read them and threw them away, and the ones I kept would disappear as well –  into the cracks of furniture and pockets and books. […]

For those who can’t stop doodling

December 30, 2017 by tillie Leave a Comment

This is a hard book to review as I have been sketchnoting for years. I picked this book up because I was teaching the technique and I wanted to give some more tangible resources to my students without going through the trouble of making too much of my own stuff. The book is beautifully constructed with lots of lovely sketchnotes and some exercises. He covers techniques, materials, supplies, rudimentary layouts and encourages you to get on sketchnoting. Reading this book took me a year, on/off […]
