“ No, Charlie wanted to insist. People only love you if you make it worth their while. No one loves you once they see your weaknesses. No one loved your flaws. No one loves your ugly, broken parts. No one loves you and expects nothing more than your love in return.”

Thief of Night (The Charlatan Duology #2) by Holly Black

October 19, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

Charlie Hall, glue trap for disaster, crooked from the day she was born, who’d never met a bad decision she wasn’t willing to double down on, may have finally met her match. After the events of the previous book, Charlie actually thought she’d won. She had managed to defeat Lionel Salt, and rescue her lover―the powerful shadow, Vince―back from under the noses of the powerful Cabal leaders, instead of Vince going to his cousin and Salt’s granddaughter, Adaline. Agreeing to become the Hierophant and risking […]

The forest and the trees

North Woods by Daniel Mason

March 17, 2025 by Fiat.Luxury Leave a Comment

I don’t know how to summarize this book – a potpourri of genres (although mostly historical fiction, if you had to pinpoint it), a truly eclectic cast of characters, and incredible prose. The kind of book where you think about the characters after the book is closed, and you puzzle over the last chapter even though he totally stuck the landing (endings are so hard!) Mason somehow describes both the forest and the trees in a very readable and really kinda weird novel. He sharply […]

Whitewashed Histories and Walls

White House by the Sea: A Century of the Kennedys at Hyannis Port by Kate Storey

August 17, 2024 by Pooja Leave a Comment

CBR16 Bingo: Cult – The Kennedys have rather a cult following, and in this book particularly we learn how many people were so fascinated they swarmed their homes in Hyannis Port. When the Kennedy family decided to make their summer home in Hyannis Port, MA, they little suspected how strongly associated the place would become with their aspirations and their scandals. I’m a Massachusetts native, but my family’s roots there don’t go back long enough to have really witnessed the heyday of the Kennedys in […]

A few Pride Month titles

Joyful Song : A Naming Story by Lesléa Newman

The Rainbow Parade: A Celebration of LGBTQIA+ Identities and Allies by Shane Jordan, Rick Hendrix and Jieting Chen

Rainbow Allies: The True Story of Kids Who Stood Against Hate by Nancy Churnin

April 22, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

My work emails are getting ready for June and Pride Month. One included a list of five picture book titles. One title I was unable to get the online reader link for, two titles I had read before (one of those I was okay, I don’t need to read again, but I had forgotten I had read the second) and they are remarkably different in how they are Prideful. (All read via an online reader and are due May 2024.)  The first I read was […]

Merry Christmas. We may need to dispense with the cold/snow songs. They’re about as realistic as Santa at this point. Mandarin Plaid **** SJ Rozan continues to improve with each book in this series. This one has layers and moves well to its conclusion. I’m not gonna be totally sold on a white person writing from the perspective of an AAPI one but I think Rozan does a better job with it than she did in the first one. May have to go long with […]

Drugs and War

Box Nine by Jack O'Connell

May 23, 2023 by Jake Leave a Comment

Life has been a lot lately — nothing too bad, just new developments — and it’s affected my reading. Usually, I knock out around 10-12 books a month. This month, I’ll get to maybe 7 if I’m lucky. Hopefully, I’m back on the horse by next month when my library’s summer reading bingos begin. At any rate, part of why I read so fast is not just retention but also so I can keep up with the momentum of a story. When I don’t have […]
